A trip report from a four-night, 50-mile hike earlier this summer in Idaho. The trip report is published in the online magazine TrailGroove along with several other great trip reports and articles. Not trying to spam or anything, but since the formatted article is already posted there I didn't feel like copying/pasting/adding photos/etc. Thanks for understanding. I haven't been too active here lately (busy summer) but wanted to drop and post this since it seemed like trip reports are still somewhat few and far between. The ones that have been posted are top-notch, I really enjoyed cweston's one about a Gore Range trip. Enjoy! The Selway River Trail Most backpacking trips enter a figurative “Paradise” at some point or another. It could be an exquisite sunset, a perfect campsite, or time spent mesmerized by a waterfall. My trip along the Selway River Trail with my stalwart backpacking companion Justin had the amusing distinction of actually beginning at a Paradise. The Paradise boat launch and trailhead in the Bitterroot National Forest in a remote corner of Idaho, to be exact. From here we would follow the Selway River downstream for approximately 50 miles and pass through some of the most remote country in the Lower 48... Thanks for the trip report. I see you posted it in the Trailhead register instead of the Trip Reports forum so I hope you get more hits than I got with my recent report. I always keep trying to copy and paste and print the text in Trail Groove articles for later reading out on the trail but dangit it never seems to work. Not allowed?
The 1.3 million acre Selway-Bitterroot dwarfs our largest Eastern wilderness---Cohutta/Big Frog at 45,000 acres. What's the rules in the Selway? Permits? Designated camping spots? Fees? Waiting list for reservations??

You're welcome. Yeah, I've always thought the "Trip Reports" forum was a bit redundant and that they should just be posted in the Trailhead Register since this is a backpacking forum, after all, and that trip reports should be of interest as part of general discussion, but I digress.
As far as copy/paste/print TrailGroove articles, I'm not sure what the issue is but I've never tried to print them myself. I'm guessing that if you paid for the PDF version then you could print it out easily.
No special rules or restrictions for backpacking in the Selway other than group size limitations (standard for most wilderness areas). No fees. No designated camping spots. No reservations. Pretty much as hassle free as backpacking in Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness. And yeah . . . it's big country out here!
I just scanned your trip reports and pictures. Very enjoyable to look through. I did several trips to Slickrock/Citico when I lived in Kentucky and absolutely loved the area. I've spent about a dozen different nights in the same spot you camped at near the Hangover. Surprised to see Deep Creek so clear! That trail was ROUGH the two times I hiked it. Really cool seeing pictures from that area.

Also, funny that you ran into John Quillen on the trail . . . I ran into him once at Bob Bald. He'd overshot Wolf Laurel (?) Trail looking for a friend. Ran into another guy on that trip that knew you as well. We all appreciated the work you'd done on North Fork Citico Creek.

IIRC, the other option came about because TRs got buried so quickly here that no one saw them, after the first burst of interest. I do regularly scan the Storytelling section and read TRs. I'm less likely to follow links.

Thanks for posting,I always have enjoyed your ,well written, trip reports. So far, I have skimmed the pictures in your and the Sonoran Desert report, which I also find intreaging, and read the camera review and .plan to read the reports and the photo tips article(since I am looking for a camera).
It appears backpacker has some online competition now, though this appears more geared towards the experienced backpacker while backpacker caters more to the beginner/intermediate who tend to do the one annual epic trip.
Also, for the record, the Everglades NP in South Florida is over 1.5 million acres while the adjoining Big Cypress National Preserve ,more suitable for backpacking versus paddling,is 720,000 acres.
