Ok so I know I could just as easily Google this, but I would much prefer to ask you lovely people instead. I would like to take a weekend (2.5 days, 2 nights) backpacking trip in my new habitat. I don't really know much about hiking in Oregon or places to go yet. I'm just dying to get out in the woods. This move has completely zapped our summer. Could someone tell me of a good trail near Portland that is maybe a 20 mile loop or hike in and out? When would be the best time to go? And links to info please? Thank you!!

Maybe not your first hike out there, but I will always recommend the St Helens area, due to my longtime fascination with the place. About this time last year I did the ~5 miles and ~2000' up from Norway Pass trailhead to Mt Margaret before heading over Mt Wittier to camp at Shovel Lake finished the short loop the next day. The long loop is around 26-27 miles. Another link from Oregon Hikers.
Hiked parts of this as well: www.evergreenmtb.org/trails/ape-canyon-plains-of-abraham-smith-creek and the whole loop os 26 miles.

Anywhere out in the gorge on the Oregon side or near Mt. Hood, you'll find plenty of trails or chains of trails that you can adjust to make roughly 20 mile loops - Frog lake area, Trillium lake, and Larch Mountain. There are many Oregon trail books that have them rated by difficulty and length. The Sisters Wilderness area has plenty of hikes in that length with reasonable difficulty that have lots of variety of terrain, going on both the West and East sides of the Cascades.

Where's Ranger Sven these days? At a guess, either out hiking or in the book store

Salmon/Huckleberry Wilderness was one of my first backpacking trips Just got back from camping up near Rainier/St. Helens and saw some gorgeous country. Anywho, I'm out here in NE Oregon so holler if you ever want to meet halfway somewhere and go for a hike!
