Oh dear, we just returned home from Normandy, where we spent a long weekend hiking around the beautiful Cap de la Hague. The weather was perfect and the French trails are absolutely beautiful. Normandy is one of my favorite regions in France, for sure. I do recommend visiting the place as a stop over destination, or why not the main destination. There is the GR 223 running around the peninsula and some shorter trails too for day trippers. And France is very tolerating towards wild campers, as long as you keep things clean! Go read the story and take a look at the pictures here: Normandy - On the Coast.I hope you enjoy!

Loved the narrative and the photos! I've always wanted to live in France, so your report was especially interesting.
I have a question: close to the end of your narrative, just after the description of arriving at Biville, and between a photo (I believe of you) and of Waffle (?) reading a map, there's a photo of what appears to be a narrow gauge rail track going down a hill directly into the sea. What is the track for? Is it left from WWII, perhaps providing track for some kind of vehicle to be launched into the sea?
I loved seeing the old, quaint buildings in the photos titled "And finally back to civilization."
Thanks for sharing your photos and excursions through the Normandy area. I really enjoyed it.
Have you ever hiked in the Provence area? I'm reading, for the umpteenth time, Peter Mayle's "A Year in Provence", so your narrative was very timely to once again remind me of how different, and relaxing (after becoming used to the different pace), it must be to live in the Provencal area.

Hi Autumnist! I am happy to hear you have enjoyed my post. I do share your feelings about France, it is a magnificent country, with so many different faces! Regarding the photo, of the gauge trail, we indeed were wondering the same thing first. Then we saw, that the rail was for taking boats out to the sea. There is a nuclear plant right next to those and I guess, the boats were part of that operation, since they were stored behind a locked fencing that surrounds the whole plant. Hum, Provence. No, I have not been to the actual Provence area, but Waffle's parents have a second home in the Gorge of Ardeche, witch is right next to Provence. Not quite the same thing, but. Here are the links to those posts, we were there always in the off season, December etc. so it might not look as sunny and inviting in our photos as in the holiday brochure, but then, in the full summer, the hiking is not too much fun Ardeche and Pyrenees in DecemberArdeche in NovemberArdeche and the northern coast of France in AprilMaybe these might interest you? - Veera

I have always thought France was well set up for bike touring, and have learned much about the country from following touring journals.I am glad to hear the sights, coasts, mountains, villages, local farms, etc. can be experienced from hiking trails, as well.I like your strategy of "hiking across countries".It seems perfectly suited for Europe, and it is always motivational to have such goals.

Hi rwtb123! France is just an absolute hikers paradise. There are multiple GR routes going to Compostela plus the regional routes. The infrastructure around them is just phenomenal. And cycling is of course an excellent way to explore the country. Val de Loire is something I have my eyes set on Crossing countries is indeed fun! You see a lot by doing that and the only way to get home is usually to walk the whole distance, to find your car again... And BTW here is a our story of crossing Luxembourg on foot.

Val de Loire is something I have my eyes set on Now you've done it! I'll be daydreaming about biking and/or hiking in the Loire Valley and won't get anything done today! For me that would be the event of a lifetime. I hope you're planning to see Chenonceau and Villandry? These are two of my favorite castles - I've never visited France in person, but am still in love with the country, and especailly the magnificant castles with their formal gardens. Please be sure to let us know when you visit the Loire Valley - I'll be anxiously awaiting another photo tour. And thanks so much for the links of your other travels. I did start wandering though them yesterday, but decided that, like good chocolate, great photos are to be savored and enjoyed in leisurely fashion. And I will definitely be back to your site.

Oh I am sorry autumnist, for ruining your day in such manner. :D You'll definitely be hearing from that excursion, once it takes place. At least the Chenonceau castle will be on our visiting list, time will tell which others
