The alternate I like? Pacific Coast Highway, Rt. 1 , give Redwoods a visit. . That is a REALLY long route We've done it, at least most of the way up Oregon before losing patience/running out of time. But it's been a long time since we've been on the coast north of the CA/OR line. Might be food for thought. I've a nephew and new grand-nephew on the coast. And it might be fun to just take a week with the kid. Wish the spouse could go too, but sadly, he has to work.

Even skipping Cal the Oregon coast and its various state parks is a treat.

Things really are a long way apart out here! And even though the Bay area is "northern" California, there's still a LOT of California further north. I'd go with the drive when you have time for a few days. Mainly because I like driving. And because I know too many folks who "know" how to haul stuff but could still find a way to break an anvil. lol
