BTW, I hauled one of those old peddle Singers from Oregon to Florida and suffered no damage, despite just placing it in direct contact with the truck floor. Wrought iron legs held up just fine.

Antique dealers ship large fragile items all the time. They know which carriers to use and how to pack it. Contact a local antique dealer, they may even arrange the transport for a fee.

I shipped an 18 ft kayak from Portland Oregon to Tampa Florida for $300 + $100 for the store to pack it. I used a brokerage place. Commercial location pick up and drop off required.
Another option is to find someone driving a U-Haul down and that will bring it close to you. BlueBear used some service when he shipped his Dad's tool chest to Colorado, from Florida. I happen to know this because he temp stored it at my house for the guy to pick up. Maybe he will respond with the directions to use such a service. Seems like the fee was negotiable Seems like tagging no longer works for me this afternoon. Thanks Vince! It was actually my brother that arranged that shipping deal from your house to his in Colorado. I'm actually not entirely sure what service he used, but I could ask him and let y'all know.

I may bring the head back with me on the plane, though it will be heavy carry-on! I'm headed up to see mom in a few weeks, but I'm flying.

I did not intend to imply 13 or so hours drive was a short trip, BUT it is not that big of a deal. The drive will cost less than shipping. Then again I'm used to long road trips.
edit: I live in SoCal and have driven to SEA more than a few times.

It's funny. We've done some colossal road trips as a family, but I balk a bit at the Seattle thing. Part of that is the alone part. I did drive back from Colorado last summer largely alone, and it wasn't so bad. But I still prefer to be able to swap drivers. Thus the thought that I would wait until Second Son can go with me.

Just to be clear, I wasn't reading directly to your post--it just reminded me of a misconception I encountered regularly when I lived in Seattle.

It's interesting how attitudes about driving vary so much from family to family. No one in my family thinks much of driving long distances, alone if need be. I've driven through the night coming home from BP trips a few times someone had to be to work the next day or something. My (young adult) children all enjoy road trips. My daughter and her wife drove to Milwaukee for the weekend (from Kansas) last week. By contrast, my sister lives 5.5 hours away. But she clearly considers driving that distance to be a horrible thing to be avoided at all costs.

cweston-
Thread drift.
No harm no foul. I've pulled more 24 hour stints than I care to think about. Not the smartest things I've done.
Back on thread: rebeccad, why not take a 4 day weekend with a stop on the way and back? Like HSF wrote, enjoy the road trip.
Cheers!

rebeccad, why not take a 4 day weekend with a stop on the way and back? Like HSF wrote, enjoy the road trip. Which is why I'm thinking I can wait until I have a whole week. Then I will actually have time to visit family and friends, too The more I think about this, the more I like that solution!

There is a lot of fun to be had on that road trip, Though after 25 years of living in CA while family lives in WA, I've worn a groove down I5...

So get off I5 and take side roads. Just a suggestion. Takes longer but more to see; an opportunity to slow down and smell the roses as it were.

So get off I5 and take side roads. I like occasionally going down the east side of the mountains. Most of our trips up and back are at Xmas, so we like the highway.
