Crunchy, Salty & Sweet Trail Mix
Ingredients:
1 cup granola 1 cup salted pretzel sticks 1 cup semisweet or dark chocolate chips 1½ cups Dried Cranberries 1 cup cocoa covered almonds 1 cup Dried Cherries Directions:
Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
Break the pretzel sticks up coarsely, place in a cereal bowl. Add the granola to a second cereal bowl.
Place 2/3 cup of the chocolate chips in a small heat safe mixing bowl. Melt in the microwave on High for 30 seconds, stir, continue on 20 second intervals, stirring after each one, until the chips are melted and smooth. Mix in remaining chips, stir until melted and smooth.
Drizzle half of the melted chocolate over the pretzels, the other half over the granola. Stir each bowl until thoroughly coated. Spread each on the parchment paper, separating into small chunks. Place in the refrigerator until set, about an hour.
Break into small pieces, add to a large mixing bowl with the cranberries, almonds and cherries, toss to mix.
Store in an airtight container, take with you in snack bags.
Makes about 5½ cups.

I like to keep the parts of my trail mix separate. So I'll have a bag of mixed nuts (I added sesame sticks on this latest trip), and a bag of dried fruit, and another of something like dark chocolate berries. This is partly for the sake of the kid who doesn't like nuts, and partly because sometimes I want one element and sometimes another. I do have a killer hiking-cookie recipe, though

I mimic a Trader Joe's one, with crystalized ginger, cranberries, macadamia nuts, and raw almonds.

Now then, I should be honest: I don't carry or eat many nuts anymore. Our youngest has a severe set of nut allergies. So I don't do trail mix anymore, unless on the rare trip where I am alone.

Peanut M&Ms and add cashews to the bag. Done. Protein + chocolate. What more do you need? If I want more salt, I'll eat Pringles. Their round box fits nicely in a water bottle pocket, and protects the chips too!
I do like those sesame sticks, and when I can find them in a mix with hot spicy tidbits, I will take them for a mix.

Zeke--I don't think this helps you, but Trader Joe's sells sesame sticks all on their own. I like the Pringles notion. Sometimes I do want a potato chip; I have been known to carry a bag of them carefully strapped to the top of someone's pack, letting the puffiness of a bag hauled to high elevations help protect them (with 4 of us, we can eat all or nearly all in one sitting so don't have to worry about what happens after they are opened).

I would be interested in any good ideas that don't involve nuts. Eldest Son has no allergies, but he strongly dislikes the texture of nuts (nut butters are just fine, so it's not the flavor. He's all about textures). He ends up eating lots of jerky and goldfish on the trail, but any better ideas would be appreciated!

rebeccad I can get just sesame sticks in bulk sections of a couple of stores. Too tasty for the house.

Absolutely! One drawback of the bag from TJs (besides being a LOT of them) is that I was able to read the nutrition info :0

To be honest, because of Alistaire, I often make bags for them with savory crackers and prezels, dried fruit they like, little candies he can eat, even diced jerky. Although for him, I always have a ton of single serving snacks on hand that I know are safe.

Flies, moths and mosquitos. LOL! It's so much easier when you're a newt.

This year, my trail mix has been a mix of things not so good for me but at the end of the trek the 'trail mix' I bring is all gone.
I been grabbing a few items from the Costco Bulk section. I am really liking the Mt Hood mix, I can walk along and pop one yummie covered nut at a time into my mouth and crunch away. Perhaps the worst trail mix items have been from the candy section. I have found the Laffy Taffy and Air Nerds hold up to the heat quite well. I drop a whole roll of Smarties into my mouth letting them dissolve their badness into my awaiting tummie. And last but not least are the host of hard candies available in the bulk section.
When it comes to food, outside of my one complete day of evergency rations, I really dislike returning to the trailhead with a bunch of uneaten food items.

I LOVE shrimp chips! (though here they're 'prawn crisps')
