Be aware that a large wildfire, the Beaver Creek Fire is burning at the N end of the Zirkel Wilderness. Because of the massive amount of beetle-killed standing and fallen timber, management agencies have taken a "Let Nature Take Its Course" stand and are only standing by to protect structures on private property, outside of the Wilderness. Containment is estimated for late Oct., when the snow starts piling up. I live 85 mi away and the smoke plume stretches from horizon to horizon and has been blanketing the Rawah's and Snowy Range just a few miles downwind of the fire. Air quality in those areas has frequently dropped into the "unhealthy" range. We had a very good late Spring surge of mosture, but it's been dry as a bone for the past two months and most weeks have brought a new record high temp or two. The hills look more like late Aug than early July. Fire restrictions have been set in place. Just a heads up !

I'm sorry to hear that; the Medicine Bows were a favorite area of mine.

Yikes! I was planning on backpacking around Gilpin Lake in a couple weeks (long ways south I guess), does the smoke travel that far?

Yikes! I was planning on backpacking around Gilpin Lake in a couple weeks (long ways south I guess), does the smoke travel that far? When the winds are NW, the smoke has choked me out and cut my viz to 3-5 mi, multiple times, where I live ~ 85 mi away !! Prevailing winds are usually from the SW/SSW during the Monsoon Season, which has kicked in full force, so you'll likely be OK.

Thanks for the info. We will just keep plans as-is but be ready to change them if the winds shift!

The fire blew up BIG TIME yesterday. The smoke plume blocked out the sun here by 7pm last night, and it's been a steady ash fall all day long today.
And I'm 85 mi away !

The Monsoon is getting pretty well developed, big storms every day in mountains with SW winds keeping the smoke to the NE. There's a couple of cold fronts due in towards the end of the week that could push the smoke plume towards the south.
