Diercon is the world leading water filter company. And I'm the world leading maker of bridges, want to buy one?
Bragging about being the only manufacturer of any product in China is kinda really sorta funny.

I'm a kookoo and still use a First Need.
I've been carrying a Sawyer Mini, though...haven't tried it yet. I was interested in using it like a straw. Just found out, too, after reading this that the threads work on a smartwater bottle...

I'm looking at the gravity filter kits, which are kind of pricey, but as far as I can tell, all I really need is the filter unit and some tubing and I can create my own gravity filter set-up. Platy bags are cheap, and I have lots of tubing around. Am I missing something? Or can I just buy, say, the Sawyer Mini replacement filter and take it from there?

I use a Sawyer Mini. Evernew and Platypus make bags with the proper thread pitch. One clean bag, one dirty bag, and a little hose that comes with it and you're good to go. The Mini comes with a small bag and tube, or at least the kit I bought did. Backflush once in a while.

I'm thinking about doing this. We've been using chemical treatment for quite a while, but I miss the taste of untreated (filtered) water. Plus, on longer trips, it just seems good to maybe not ingest so many chemicals.

I know this is true for Evernew, but everything else I've read/heard says Platypus is the wrong thread pitch. This is true, however some people can screw a Sawyer onto a Platy or a "regular" water bottle with no problem. I can't, I've tried and it leaks. I don't know the secret. SmartWater bottles also have the same thread pitch as the Sawyer and Evernew.

I recall using Zeke's gravity filter a couple of years ago. He just dropped the end of the clean hose into the water bag and let it drip in. You do have to be more careful not to knock things over that way, of course.

You do have to be more careful not to knock things over that way, of course. That's not the threads I'm talking about. The Sawyer mini itself screws onto the dirty bag and needs a tight seal so you can squeeze the bag and push the water through. Sawyer bags last about as long as Saran Wrap. Evernew bags are wonderful but HARD TO FIND. I've ordered twice recently and had them cancel the order for lack of stock.

I'm a kookoo and still use a First Need. First needs are not light, but provide the most comprehensive purification. Especially if you are dealing with agricultural runoff.

I just screwed the Mini into an older version of one of these Platys, and it worked. Hard to believe, but maybe some of their products have a different thread pitch. Holding the Evernew and Platy next to each other there appears to be a very tiny difference in the thread, but the Platy only has about 1 1/4 turns, so maybe if it had two or three full turns the difference would be more noticeable.

After hearing 30+ stories of backcountry water sourced giardia... including the one SAR professional who has had 14 courses of antibiotics and is still having symptoms years later because it has never gone away, I would MUCH RATHER TREAT THE WATER. A filter doesn't do anything to the taste. The symptom list, in case you have yet to read it, is here: www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/giardia-infection/basics/symptoms/con-20024686
