Right now I have a possible trip that I'm planning for the week around Labor Day. It will be a wednesday to tuesday trip. Me and my backpacking buddy are looking for a trip itinerary and we are worried about doing Rocky Mountain National Park or Indian Peaks because it might be too crowded because of Labor Day.
So, we are looking for a trip idea. Either a loop or a place we can get shuttled. I personally would like to hike the CDT, but it's not a definite requirement.
I may fly into Denver and have my backpacking friend who lives in Nebraska pick me up. Or I might take the train from Illinois and have my friend hop on the train in Nebraska.
One Idea I had was to get off the train at Frazier/Winter Park, Hike the CDT up to Grand Lake, then get a ride to Granby and pick up the train going east to home. Has anyone ever done something like that?
Let me know any suggestions you have
thank you.

Years ago, I lived in Fort Collins, and always enjoyed the Rawah Wilderness area (Roosevelt NF) in Colorado and the Medicine Bows (Medicine Bow NF) in Wyoming (west of Laramie). In general, the further you get from Denver/Colorado Springs, the less crowded things will be. For the Rawahs, there is a map here: Rawah Wilderness TrailsI did the one beginning at West Branch trailhead, to Twin Crater Lakes, over Grassy Pass, past the 4 Rawah Lakes, then Lower Camp Lake, and consider it one of my most memorable trips. It was almost 30 years ago!

I'm heading to Indian Peaks next weekend, and that exact loop in Rawah is my backup plan (specifically a forest fire )

Getting to the CDT from Winter Park is very doable, but getting from the CDT to Granby would be a bit more of a stretch, plus, it would also take you through the Indian Peaks.
One idea would be do a loop, heading east from Winter Park, south to Berthoud Pass, cross over and head towards Mt Nystrom, then north to Ptarmigan peak, then work you way back to Winter Park.

Basically, the idea was to take the train to Winter Park/Frazier. Get a Taxi to the CDT at Berthoud Pass which is 10 miles south of Winter Park. Hike north from there to a little town called Grand Lake. Then get a ride back to a town called Granby where there is a train station. Total mileage would be 54.6 miles. If I need to cut it short, there is a road on the south end of Granby Lake that goes to Arapaho Valley Ranch. That would cut 13 miles off the hike.

I second the Rawah idea. My wife and I did a loop there over Labor Day a few years back and it was pretty empty. There is a blog entry about it at cadeandmolly.com
I think it was back in 2010.

It was a long weekend trip; three days/two nights. Think it was over July 4th weekend 1988. I don't know the mileage, but would guess it was a bit over 20 miles.
