A new member signed up to post links to drone videos of Mt. Rainier and the Olympic Peninsula. My immediate reaction was that I would not be happy to have a drone flying around me if I were on the trail. I checked, and so did Travis, and we both found links to news that a law was passed in 2014 that bans drones in ALL national parks and monuments.
I removed the links to the videos as products of illegal activity.
So how would you react to having a drone in your vicinity if you were out on a trip? How do drone videos fit in with the generous ability to add random photos and videos?

Drones are illegal in all National Park areas and also Wilderness Areas. There are also frequent problems of them interfering with aircraft operations during wild fires, delaying critical response times. Ugh.

Exactly what I said in my reply to the OP: "...since there is a 5000 acre fire burning locally and the retardant drops were grounded for a day because somebody was flying a drone over the fire, I am clearly not a fan."

I go out into nature to escape technology. I don't want a visual and audio irritant messing up my peace and quiet

While i agree it would be cool to have an overhead video of your campsite or place you were hiking, out of respect to others, I can't get behind the idea of them being acceptable anywhere on public lands.

Personally I don't want to drone flying over my head while I'm out enjoying nature but I have a feeling there will be provisions for drone use on park lands someday. I was just watching the documentary, "Making North America" which had a lot of drone footage that helped explain geographical points of interest that enhanced the story. I could see where permits could be issued for such events or even licensed drone operators used for SAR operations, but to have the average person out with their drone on public land though I think has already proven to intrusive for the wildlife, much less my own personal space. I'm sure there will be a day when our own wildlife agencies and parks have drones to collect data and/or police our parks. As unpopular as it may seem, I think it's just a matter of time.

I'm sure there will be a day... I agree. Just like cell phones were initially not allowed (they were going to make people less careful since help was now available) and yes, drones have many positive uses, from collecting scientific data to gathering spectacular visuals for all sorts of educational videos. Of course the law will likely ease up to allow commercial permits to let proven drone operators to access all sorts of park features to augment what we now see from GoPro users. But as is already said, very few people would be happy to have a drone flying along the trail with them. We will be assimilated.

I responded to that thread in the Photos Forum, then went to take a quick nap. Wouldn't you know it, I had a dream about a drone in which I was contemplating throwing rocks at it when it closed in on me. When I woke up and returned to my computer, I was surprised to find this thread. In my defense, I tend to make my own rules in my own dreams.
I think removing the video links etc. was fine. It's a serious concern which I don't feel we need to take lightly. No use allowing room for showing the exploits of those who fail to obey the laws.

Last year as I was completing a hike in the Superstition Wilderness, a low-flying drone swooped over me, not far from a popular trailhead. Its operator was standing about 15 yards outside a wilderness boundary. If I hadn't been late for a meeting, I would have sent photos of him to the Mesa Ranger District, although I don't know what they'd do. (I know it seems strange to hike under such deadlines, but opportunities like that don't come around often enough).
