Hello everybody, nice to meet you all.
In September of this year, I will be embarking on a camping trek from Sicily, up, round, and down to Greece. The trip is around 3,000 miles and will take me roughly 4-6months. I'm doing it for the MS Society UK, and so the gear will be the most important factor when it comes to planning.
I'm all sorted on most things, having an older brother being ex-forces helps a lot when it comes to bits and bobs, however I'm struggling to find the perfect pieces of the important gear:
- Tent - Sleeping bag - Walking shoes (Preferably shoes, as my ankles don't agree with the boots I've worn so far) - Water PROOF overcoat and trousers
I know that I can find these things online via google, but I think it'd be so much better to get recommendations from seasoned hikers.
Thank you for any help you give.
Jack
EDIT: Upon reading the FAQ, I've realised I've been slighty vague...
I'm anticipating a 60litre bag at around 30kg, so the tent needs to be big enough to fit myself - a 5ft10 skinny bloke along with the bag itself. Nothing else will be in the tent and I'll be cuddling it for safety, so spacially the tent can be small. So long as it's water/wind proof!
The shoes need to be mid to top of the range, really, as the walk is far and I'm not wanting to dish out for multiple pairs of mediocre.
The sleeping bag, I mean it just needs to be warm and comfy... It'll be my safe haven during the trip.
Price-wise, I'm looking to spend up to £1,000 for the lot. I'm a student, and I know that more money means better gear, but unfortunately that's my limit.
Thanks again, everybody!

I've had good luck with the REI Flash 65 and 62, $120 maybe. A great and inexpensive sleeping bag is the big Agnes boot jack 24: $135 or so. Tents: look at tarptent.com. $250 or so

That Sierra Designs 30F bag is heavy at 2 lbs, for that rating. Try enlightenedequipment.com for lighter alternatives. My Jacks R Better 20-25F quilt is 24 oz - it's easy to find lighter than that for 30F.

Almostthere - I wish I had seen your post a little earlier. I ordered a Sierra Designs quilt just 2 days ago (before I looked at Enlightened Equipment). They look great. The SD I ordered only weighs 24 oz. but the temperature rating is only 40 degrees, a full 20 degrees less warm than the Revelation for the same weight! Of course, the Enlightened Equipment costs abiout double too, but it looks well worth it. Now, I'm considering sending the SD quilt back and going with the EE quilt.
I still like my SD Backcountry Bed though; it's great on cooler weather canoe trips.

I've never regretted buying the quilts that I have, all from cottage gear makers. High quality gear is worth the investment. I have a nine year old down quilt someone offered me money for -- it was tempting. I bought it before EE was even in business, or I might have gotten one of theirs.

I'd go with the lighter gear with my 45L Mountain Laurel Designs roll top pack being the basis for my "mountain" summertime system (with EE quilt, Tarptent). One good thing about MLD is their packs have a compression system to reduce pack volume to look like a daypack (though Golites successor .. "Mytrail" or something.. has something similar on their slightly heavier packs.
