What adjustments have you made as years or injury have slowed your pace?
In 2008 I had surgery on my knee. The doc removed the interior meniscus. The only time it has given me any grief was 18 months later when I tried to do a multi day backpack trip. During that trip we moved camp each day. Too much weight over too many miles resulted in a swollen knee that hurt!
So, I no longer try to do that. Now I day hike or backpack in 6 or 8 miles, set up base camp, and day hike for a few days, then backpack out.
Lunch on these outings has become a more leisurely event. I take the time in the morning to heat water that is added to my dehydrated freezer bag lunch. By the time we stop for lunch my meal is ready. I add a piece of cheese, some dried fruit and my lunch is very satisfying.

I have made several adjustments with the most significant being dropping from 55 lbs in my backpack to 30 lbs or less. The other is I no longer do 15 mile days. Like you I mostly do a 6 - 8 mile backpack in, set up base camp, and then do day hikes until I backpack out.

I am in the market for a new bp'ing partner, as Zach seems to have grown tired of listening to me. Age has slowed me down, mostly on the uphill sections but also on the flat ones. I still hike 8-10 miles a day, moving camp each time. I have given up on carrying water for 2 dry camps, opting to change my main hiking place to one where hauling 1 qt is sufficient. My knees ache more often, but nothing Ib can't handle so far.

That's the change I've made as well. The kids would much rather hang out with their friends than go backpacking with dad.

I don't think I've changed my hiking habits much at all. I still carry an overweight pack, do 50 to 100 miles a year, go mostly solo, take lots of pictures and write up the experience.

Not because of injuries, but my kids are of age to go backpacking with me (at least 2 of them are), and so in summer months I'd rather go on 2-mile-a-day kinds of backpacking trips (where the fun of the journey far outweighs any intended destination) and spend the time with them than go on longer trips myself. Next year I think they'll be ready for longer trips themselves, just getting them "primed" for now. At some point they may not be interested any more (I was more interested in sports & girls when I was 16 myself), so then I'll probably get back to doing my own hikes in midsummer. Just me, - Mike

But I always got home safely. I'm sure age and lack of hormone saturation has given me a different backpacking interest. I gave up a lot to backpack when I was younger. But I gained a lot from it also. Yet, somehow I don't feel a need to prove myself so much these days. I spent 2 1/2 months solo in the backcountry in my early 20s and wonder if I somehow found enlightenment in achieving a measure of derangement through deprivation. I don't care to do that anymore. Long trips don't mean that much to me now. Neither does seeing new country every trip. I probably am slowing down, but as soon as something spurs my interest — like fresh mountain lion tracks to follow — I find I have far more energy than I expected. Curiosity has a way of ignoring lethargy. And maybe that curiosity is what I need more of now. I don't know. I'm still covering hundreds of miles each year, almost exclusively off-trail and solo, but I feel a need to move to a different area to place new backcountry in a new backyard. Maybe someday. No need to rave at the close of day quite yet.

Not database issues again... Ack! I can see possible "user error", and after three weeks of excellent behavior, and fixing things takes minutes, I don't hink anubody needs fear any problems such as haunted the old forum.

Trekking poles, lower mileage, and expensive lightweight gear. With age has come an increase in disposable income.

I have become more irritable and grumpy. Why, you ask? My arthritic knees displease me greatly. So far I only notice the right one, but the doctor tells me that it's just a matter of time until I start to notice the left one. My back hurts, below my left shoulderblade. I just wish I knew if I needed massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, or if I should just be "put down". And I'm not even that old.

My bad knee won't let me run, but so far I haven't lost anything else important. I have to rest longer between sets at the gym routine, but I'm also stronger than I've ever been.
