PhotosSnagging a public-use cabin is always a challenge, but they're nice when you can. Beats lugging tent, fence, and bear can. The Crescent Saddle Cabin is just under 7 miles from the trailhead. Once we were past the campground about 3 miles in we saw no one. The "Primitive Trail" as noted on the Forest Service website is really not bad in comparison to typical non-maintained trails (most) in Alaska. Our only complaint was the bear grass was 3-4 feet high in many spots and you couldn't see the trail - or any other dangers. Friday was pleasant enough even if hazy. Saturday was a bust with high wind and rain, so having the cabin was nice. Got a lot of reading done, but none of the peak-bagging I was really looking forward to. Sunday hike out got better as we went and ended up with some really beautiful sun and blue sky. Next time I'll carry the trash bag out.
