Hello everyone, we are looking for a little help with gaining a better understanding of a few things. We are doing the Yosemite North Rim trip that is highlighted in Backpacker magazine; starting on the OBOFR trailhead and following the published itinerary.
Our questions are as follows: 1. What is water availability like at this time of year? Should we plan to carry additional water? 2. Mosquitoes, how are they up on the North Rim? 3. Temperature swings, I am expecting highs in the 90s+ and lows in the 50-60s, is this accurate?
Any insight that you have would really be appreciated as we make our final preparations.
Thanks,
A

I was hoping someone who knows better than me would respond. I haven't hiked that, but it's something I'd want to hike early or late in the season because of its low elevation. You are right to be concerned about water, but the rangers will know and hopefully be honest with you. I doubt mosquitoes will be an issue, but I'd be prepared. And I think it will be warm as you expect.
I like to go to the higher country this time of year where water is never an issue. But Yosemite is awesome - you can't go wrong.

Thank you for your thoughts. This route takes us to El-Cap & North Dome; our map shows multiple streams along the way. We will definitely seek information when we pick up our permit. We have prepared for bugs with both head nets & deet. Laying out all the gear today, we are 5 days away from starting the trail! Thanks again

Might be too late for you but we did this hike 5 years ago at about the same time you're in.
1. What is water availability like at this time of year? Should we plan to carry additional water?
We didn't have issue with water at all. We camped at the same spots the magazine suggested and water was plentiful. Just loaded up the night before and we were set for the next day.
2. Mosquitoes, how are they up on the North Rim?
I don't remember the bugs being bad, that is to say I have no memory of the bugs on the trip at all so they couldn't have been that bad.
3. Temperature swings, I am expecting highs in the 90s+ and lows in the 50-60s, is this accurate? Yeah, it was hot in the sun. The second day is the worst because you're just doing swithbacks all the way up, mostly exposed. Temps got a little cool at night but not cool enough that I needed to zip up my sleeping bag (20* down). I just used it as a quilt and kicked it off when needed.
