Folks:
Taking a 5 day, 50 mile hike, through the wind rivers the 1st week in August. I know the weather can change in an instant up there. The question is, what is the nightly average the 1st week of August? I need to lower my pack weight and will be buying a new bag. I can't drop serious coin, thus I've found some Marmot 35F synthetic bags for $80 to $90. just not sure if they are warm enough for this location.
Thoughts?

I think an average night time low would be upper 30s, but expect a lot of variance around that average. I would not count on taking a 35 degree bag into the Winds, it might be fine, but I've also had temps down around 20 in late August, and that was at lower elevations. I don't know your financial situation, but if you are trying to drop weight, I certainly would not be buying synthetic, and I'd be spending a whole lot more than $90. You won't know for sure until right before you go what kinds of temps and conditions you are likely to encounter, but if I were planning for a trip to the Winds that time of year I'd be looking at a 20 degree down bag, and a pad with an r-value of at least 3.

You can sew up a fleece liner that can weighs little, doesn't cost much, and will lower your bags temp rating by about 10 degrees.

Another vote for a "sleep system" in the 25F range. Out of 20+ trips to the Winds between July and Sept., there was only one trip without at least one night that got a bit below freezing. As was pointed out earlier, you might get another 10F out of a 35F bag by using a fleece liner, but then the extra weight and bulk would also suggest getting the 25F bag to begin with. I'd check out " Sierra Trading Post" regularly, if you need a reasonable quality discount bag.

IF you are prepared to wear all your other clothes if needed, you should be able to get by with a new Marmot synth bag if you also have a good pad. You may also be a warm sleeper. You should expect at least 1 night below freezing. You could get a foot of snow at any time though it will melt off quick in Aug.
