I have plans later this summer to meet up with a friend near Austin, NV, then we'll head south for a few days roaming the Toiyabe, Toquima and/or Monitor ranges. Looking for any advice for good dayhikes or peak climbs, road conditions, good dispersed camping spots (preferably at or near trailheads), historical sites, resupply opportunities. We'll be travelling in two AWD Subarus with some ground clearance, so we can handle some degree of poor road but not full on 4x4. I know this is a remote area, minimally developed and lightly traveled; I'm not finding an abundance of information via internet search, which is making the planning all that more interesting.
Thanks!

That's part of the reason I like some of Nevada's mountains. SO little information out there. We did the Rubies out of Elko -- we paid a shuttle to get to Harrison Pass, as that's a real 4x4 road, and did the Ruby Crest in 3.5 days -- great fun, no permits other than fishing, and I want to go back there again. No bears, great fishing. I also want to go visit the Jarbridges.
I'd call the ranger station and talk to them. Got good information from them when we went to the Rubies.

And some of the best areas are not in Great Basin NP or a designated Wilderness.
On another forum I read about an all dirt mountain bike route from Great Basin to Reno (unsurfaced road/trails/4wd road). Perfect bikepacking route.
