Folks:
I'm taking my twin boys (12) on a 5 day wind rivers backpacking experience. I have an older pack that I no longer want to use, thus I'm in the market. Also, I don't want either boy packing more than 25 to 30 lbs. for obvious reasons. Therefore, I may have to carry more gear than usual. We will share a 3 man tent and stove, first aid kit, etc. So overall we will save on weight between us, but I need to carry more of the load.
My current estimate is a 40 lb. pack for me. Final figures will come in as I figure out some other essentials.
Two packs I'm debating are:
Buying the Osprey Atmos AG 65 (large). About $260 bucks
or
Renting a Mountain Hardwear South Col 70 OutDry for $30.
I may use the Osprey a few more times in the future; however, if you removed the future use factor and just considered comfort and ability to comfortably haul that weight for 50 miles in 5 days, what would you pick?
I've tried on the Atmos (albeit only briefly) and was very impressed with the support system; I've never seen the Mountain Hardware South Col. 70...thus I came to this forum looking for some outside opinions.
Thanks,
TKH

My boys are 90 lbs. So 20% would be 18. So you are spot on and my 25-30 was high. So....I will have even more to carry. Lovely. Time to buy a lighter sleeping bag as our current config has bags that weigh 6lbs.

What's the tent weigh? And yes, six pounds for a sleeping bag is very correctable. Far too heavy. That might be an area to look at renting the place you could rent that pack?
Are you including a base camp day in there anywhere? Continuous days for a first trip might be less fun than they'd want.

Don't buy a pack you haven't tried on, especially for a heavy load. Even if others tell you they love it, that may be a good reason to consider it but not to decide on it, how it rids on others could be very different from how it rides on you. Exception would be if you "buy" it for the purpose of trying it on, with an easy ability to return it.

Definitely test bags with weight. I think I drove the poor sales guy crazy trying bags over and over. I finally went with the Osprey Atmos 50. It's a men's pack, but it was most comfortable on me. I love it!

@high Sierra Fan: The tent I have is a 3 man (58 wide, so tight but works). It weighs 6 lbs. I don't know if I can get a 3 person tent that is much lighter.
I think lighter bags are in order, for sure.

It weighs 6 lbs. I don't know if I can get a 3 person tent that is much lighter. tarptent.comThe 3P Rainshadow 2 and Cloudburst 3 may be tight for 3 people depending on how big they are and how much room they like. The 4P Hogback will certainly do the trick, and it's 4.1 pounds. That's for silnylon. If you want to go cuben you can save even more weight, but spend a lot more money.

I have a 3 person tent that is 42 ounces. Tarp tent Rainshadow is what I own, but the Cloudburst May suit you better, with 2 doors.
As for space, 3 adults slept in my Rainshadow for an entire trip on the Teton Crest.
Well, it seems 2 of us had the same idea, which is to link you to tarp tent.

As others say, it's hard to make a decision about a pack you've never tried on. But renting isn't a bad way to go, especially since it sounds like you might not be using the pack a lot in future. Of course, that raises the question about upgrading sleeping bags (which clearly need it) for the same reason. You can make your pack weight pretty low by throwing a lot of money at the problem, but that's a choice you'll have to make. For the record, my husband has been carrying at Osprey Atmos 70 for quite a few years, and used to carry 50+ lbs when our boys were smaller, so it's doable, assuming the pack fits you well. Take a look at the food forum and check out Sarbar's trailcooking.com website for ideas about keeping the food weight down. That can be important (but also depending on how your kids are with food, you may want to haul a fair supply of their favorite granola bars; we used to have to sometimes substitute bars for a kid's dinner (and then eat the uneaten food ourselves). We last hiked the Winds when our boys were 13 & 14--time to get back

By the way, I think last year, hiking with our then 17 y.o., for the first time a kid's pack outweighed mine. And his dad's, even. It didn't seem to slow him down much, but it took a long time to get to that point!

Shave weight. Depending on the area, an alcohol stove can shave plenty of weight for very little money. whiteboxalcoholstoves.com/Down bags are much lighter and will last much longer but are more expensive. As mentioned, there are plenty of shelters that are lighter. If you are willing to go fly only (which I do all the time), You can be under 3 lbs for a 4-man shelter - mytrailco.com/collections/site/products/pyramid-4-shelter. Wear simplistic clothing setups - 3 layer base/insulation/shell with minimal backup/extras and learn to wash your socks and underwear. Theoretically, most of your weight will be coming from food. Simplify your foods to higher calorie meals and snacks. Don't bother looking at a pack until you really know your volume and weight. Then, get the most simplistic pack that comfortably carries the load. I've done all sorts of different styles of pack support over the year. The best pack will be the one that fits without needing any tweaking at all. A great load pack will carry more weight while it is barely noticable. For reference, With my two eight year old daughters and 15 year old son, I end up carrying roughly 30 lbs for a five day trek.

So you haul the beer and the kids haul the non-essentials? The longer the hike, the less beer I take. Mind you, I take more whisky.

I love some of their stuff like clothes, tents and bags but backpacks are not up to snuff compared to Osprey, Gregory, Lowe etc. I'm a big fan of Osprey and think you should try one of the Aethers. They'll carry a little more weight than the Atmos and fit closer to your back for better balance if that's important however you can't go wrong with any Osprey imho
