I'm appreciative of the information to date. I'm headed to Mt. Ranier in late July. Hope to camp at White River and do some day hikes while I'm there.
I saw some Forest Service campgrounds on the map which are off the road from Yakima (410?). Any comments about these sites as an alternative to White River in the NP?
Thanks!
Randy

There are 2 FS campgrounds on the West side, on Hwy 410. Both are quite nice! On the East side of 410, over Chinook Pass there are many campgrounds but you can also still find plenty of dispersed camp areas (read free) on the river, along the hwy. They fill up on the weekends, but weekdays can be wide open.

For just sheer beauty and easy access the Wonderland trail is hard to beat. Drive to a road access (Carbon River - clockwise on Wonderland, Mowich Lake - Spray Park, Longmire Indian Henry, White River - Summerland, Sunrise - counter clockwise on Wonderland)
Labor day the flowers were gorgeous on South and east sides as were the huckle berries.

We'll soon be on our way to the park! We're camping in a central location and plan to spend one day exploring the Paradise area, one day exploring Sunrise, and one day Mount Saint Helens. Would like to know the best trails in Sunrise and Paradise areas to see flowers, waterfalls, and/or lakes, at about 1-3 miles long.

Hi Tarol,
I hope this message catches you in time. I just returned from camping at the White River Campground last week. Here's a brief overview of my hikes. Generally, there was very good signage and it would be hard to get lost I think.
1) At Sunrise: The Sunrise Rim trail was about the correct distance you seek, perhaps a bit longer. It's a loop trail but you could just return the way you came. It's a nice easy walk. I also hiked the Boroughs Mountain trail which is more alpine and treeless. This is an out and back or a "lollypop" hike. Great views of Mt. Rainier. It crossed several small patches of snow above Frozen Lake so poles or traction devices are nice though I saw lots just crossing them in sneakers.
2) At White River Campground: The Glacier Basin trail winds it's way through the forest to Glacier Basin. It passes a few meadows near the end. It's a longer distance than you desire but worthy of looking into. There is also a spur off this trail to view the Emmonds (spelling?) Glacier.
Hope you enjoy your trip as much as I did!

We just got back! We camped at La Wis Wis for 4 nights. Very glad we decided to camp in a National Forest campground just outside the park - the park was insanely busy. They said it's because of the Centennial! We tried to go to Sunrise but the line of cars going in was backed up for miles. So we turned around and ended up going to Chinook Pass and hiking around Tipsoo Lake and also did the Naches Peak Loop. Very proud of my son for he hiked about 5 miles that day and did very well! It was a gorgeous trail - wonderful views of Mt. Rainier and lakes and wildflowers galore! Sunday we went to Windy Ridge/Mt. Saint Helens. Another gorgeous area. Didn't do any long trails that day but still had fun hiking short trails and my son attended his first interpretive ranger program That's how I got my start! And the flowers, again, were at their peak, so we timed that right. Monday we went to Paradise and hiked around there. Even on a weekday it was busy busy! But I'm glad we experienced it at least once.
