We are planning a hut to hut hike in Switzerland and looking seriously at the Tour du Mount Ruan on the Swiss / French border. The book we have and information gathered on line is fairly vague on the experience level needed for this hike (but does include some adrenaline generating sctions of the trail), We are two experienced backpackers and one 14 year teenager. Anyone have some first had experience on this TREK? Thanks Fred

I did the TMB last September. Every day is strenuous. Typical day is 3,000 ft up and 3,000 ft down. Scenery is magnificent. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU MAKE HUT RESERVATIONS IN ADVANCE! All huts (11 nights) were filled up each night when we did it. Doesn't matter which direction you do it. Trekkerman in Big Wyoming

The Tour du Ruan is a five-day hike around Mont Ruan ( not the TMB -- the Tour du Mont Blanc -- which does take about 11 days). I hiked the Tour du Ruan in 2003 and have also hiked the Tour des Dents Blanches (which is common with the Tour du Ruan for one dramatic part: the passage of the Tête des Ottans) several times. The Tour du Ruan is well within the scope of fit, experienced backpackers. The stage from Susanfe to Vogealle is challenging (steep; some ladders) but not really technical. I would choose the TDB over the TMR, but both are great hikes. You may have already seen this site, but in case not, see: www.tourduruan.com
