Has anyone ever hiked from Black Canyon Lake to Moon Lake? There are unofficial trails to both (Lake Fork Trail gets to Black Canyon Lake and Glacier Lake trailhead will get you to Moon Lake), but no trail in between the two. I'm wondering what the terrain is like between the two lakes and if its doable to get from Black Canyon Lake to Moon Lake? We are experienced at off trail hiking in the Beartooths but have not found any information about the terrain between the two lakes and have not been off trail in this area of the Beartooths. Our preferred route would be Lake Fork trailhead to Black Canyon Lake and up Thunder Mountain, then backcountry to Moon Lake and out on Glacier Lake Trail. We would have a gps. Thanks in advance!

I haven't been in that part of the Beartooths, but just looking at the map, the pass west of Mt. Rearguard that would offer direct access to the Moon Lake basin looks prohibitively steep. It looks like it *might* be possible to climb a gulley system up the NW face of Rearguard from not far upstream from Black Canyon Lake. From the top of Rearguard, you might find a more direct descent to Moon Lake, but it looks like you'd at least be able to descend S the SE around Shelf Lake and drop into the Moon Lake drainage downstream of Shelf Lake.
My sense, looking at the map, is at if it were me, I'd want to have some beta that indicates these routes are doable before planning a trip around it. Have you checked for route information for Mt. Rearguard at summitpost, etc?
