Hello all! I'm planning on doing the full Lost Coast Trail as a graduation requirement for my university degree. I live in Canada so will be driving about 20hrs for the trip so bringing two cars is not an option. The shuttle service is a bit steep in price for my student budget, as well as it seems to just do the Northern portion of the trail. I'm wondering if anyone has had any success with other methods, like hitchhiking.
Thanks,
Briana

The trailheads are pretty darn remote. While the trails are getting more and more crowded, you may or may not be able to time things to hitch a ride with someone... having to walk those dirt roads until you get a ride may be the end result of not having a prearranged ride.

What she said. I'm really not sure there's a good way to do it aside from paying for the shuttle. Or else turning around and walking back the way you came.

The shuttle services will go to Usal. Contact them with your dates and see if you can split the costs with another group going the same time. It is a busy, busy weekend and that should increase your chances.

Myself and a group of friends are planning a 4 day and 3 night end of summer backpacking trip to complete the northern portion of the Lost Coast trail. We plan on parking our vehicles at Black Sands Beach on the morning of Friday September 16, 2016, and catching the shuttle which will drop us off at the northern terminus, Mattole Beach trailhead. From there we will hike south on the coastal trail, camping three nights and exiting at Black Sands Beach on Monday September 19, 2016. We are on the wait list for the shuttle, since it requires 6 or more people to book it. So, we're looking for other adventurers whose trip coincides with ours to share the shuttle cost. Who among you is interested in joining us at least for the shuttle drive up to the Mattole Beach trailhead?
