Rei is a good place to start. U can visually inspect stuff in person. The folks there r very helpful.
U can find cheap stuff at major sporting goods stores or wal-mart.
I'm new to this. I started doing most online. There are websites u can buy used and clearance stuff.

REI has a great return policy and a good online store.
The Alpine Shop in Kirkwood, MO, a suburb of St Louis, is very good.

When I was at University of Iowa, Active Endeavors was my go-to. The states you listed cover a pretty huge area...many of which include an REI.

REI is now in Des Moines. We're on the map! Midwest Mountaineering in Minneapolis is also a good store if you're up that way.
Fin & Feather in Iowa City is probably the best local choice. Sadly Active Endeavors is more urban gear than anything (which was several years ago by me).

There's also a new REI store near the MOA.

I thought the thread title was "Where to buy beer in Iowa".
