Hey all,
My wife and I are going to be in Lander in mid-July and I'm hoping to get some advice on short (1 or 2 nights, maybe 10-25 miles total) backpacking trips in the area. It looks like the most popular trailheads are on the west side of the range, but as we're visiting friends in Lander and have limited time I'd prefer to stay on that side if at all possible.
From searching the internet, I've come up with a couple ideas:
-Deep Creek and/or Ice Lakes area from Worthen Meadow trailhead
-Ross Lakes or Bomber Lake up near Dubois
-Something (maybe Bears Ears or Smith Lake Basin) out of Dickinson Park (not high on my list due to the $ for permits)
For those of you familiar with the area, are any of these significantly better than the others, or do you have a better suggestion? My wife is fairly inexperienced, so preferably nothing off-trail and nothing extremely strenuous. Lastly, I've read horror stories about the mosquitoes that time of year - how bad is it?
Thanks in advance for any help. I'm a new poster here but I've found forums like this invaluable to getting first-hand advice about new areas.

Ross Lakes and Bomber Basin are AWESOME. Great time to see bighorns on whiskey Mt.
I saw the Winds from just east of Togwotee Saturday. Quite white higher up, probably still some good snow on back side of Whiskey but Bomber area is notorious for melting out earlier.

I agree with the DEET suggestion! Don't ask how I know!

I'll make sure to pack the DEET. But how bad are the mosquitoes likely to be? I've done fieldwork all over the U.S. and Central America in some areas with pretty horrible mosquitoes, but are we talking like give yourself a good coating of chemicals and you're fine or like you're going to be inhaling a few with every breath?
Also, I was just reading up on Stough Creek Basin out of Worthen Meadows. Anyone have any experience with that area?
Thanks again for the help. Normally for short trips like this I just find a couple brief trail descriptions online and go for it, but since my wife is coming this time and hasn't done much backpacking I want to make sure I know what I'm getting her into. Also, it will be my first time in the Winds so I want to make it worthwhile!

I was going to mention Stough Creek Basin !
Deep Creek Lks/Ice Lakes is a really big haul for an overnighter ! Stough Crk Basin is a perfect overnighter, but as such, is better done mid week. There is one, very long climb, right out of the chute, when you leave Worthen Meadows but then the rest of the way in is easy.
Don't stop at the first lake !! Head up into the upper basin, very easy offtrail "walking" across the tundra. Everyone stops at the first lake and it's always crowded. Take the time to hike another 1-2 mi up the Basin and solitude.
Ross Lake is also an excellent option !!
Depending on your vehicle (High Clearance 4WD required), Atlantic Canyon is awesome as well.
