Greetings, would like to spend some time at Uncompahgre, several months total. Will bring much of my resupply with me and need a place to store it. I have lost contact with my basecamp friend in Naturita and now have no place to store van and supplies. Don't think "carcamping" is possible over such a long period of time, or if there is even a place there to do such a thing. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Generally, you're limited to 14 days in a row for a single site, with a maximum of 28 days withing a 60 day period. A new campsite must be at least 3 miles away from the previous site to reset the 14 day limit. Here's some additional info on dispersed camping areas: www.fs.usda.gov/activity/gmug/recreation/camping-cabins/?recid=32366&actid=34I think you're ok as long as you keep moving around. As long as you're honest and up-front, you might want to check with the forest service. They might be able to suggest a place for you to park your van. The biggest concern with long term parking, as they don't want to trigger a missing person search unnecessarily.

You need to make an acquaintance with a campground host. Select a campground:
Must have excess parking capacity Should be a least used campground Apply Street Smarts and Andrew Jackson to your campground host

Yes, thank you both, Lamebeaver and Westy. I do not want to be seen as a negative presence and plan to hike (slowly) during my stay, not just move into a hollow log . I am downloading maps now to my new GPS and will make a note of area campgrounds. I hope to cross paths with experienced and friendly travelers such as yourselves during my trip, willing to point me in the right direction.

The Plateau or Peaks area of the National Forest? Biggest herd of elk I've ver seen in Colorado was on the plateau.
