Anyone ever hiked this trail? If so, any recommendations? We are beginning July 4th week.

I've skied it the dead of winter and it was great. We had access to a back country patrol cabin so didn't have to carry full gear. Instead, we carried in steak and beer it was great. In the summer it's prime grizzly habitat so I'm a little surprised you got a permit. The area is often closed because of bear activity so be prepared for that Lord grizz can appear at any time and foul up your plans but good luck to you.

I've hiked portions of your route and coincidentally I will be in the same area at the same time as you except I'll be travelling off-trail for the majority of my trip. Pelican Valley is a gorgeous place to see and excellent grizzly habitat so stay alert. I've also seen bison, elk and deer in the valley. The trail down the Lamar River is mostly old burn. Are you staying at campsite 3T3 on Mist Creek? If so, take a day and day hike up Pelican Cone. I'll be coming in from the north side of Pelican Cone on the 9th before heading over Lovely Pass and down to Mist Creek. Pelican Valley

I did this one back in the 80's. But, I started from the Lamar side. I did not see a single other person once I passed the Cache Creek junction until I was only 1 1/2 miles from the Pelican trailhead. Beautiful scenery! I love that upper Lamar River area.

Thanks for the feedback! You have me a little nervous about the bears. We have been told by the rangers if there is any problems with bears they will close the trail. Any recommendations?

I've been through Pelican Valley 3 times. Only saw a bear once, but that was a ways north along the creek on the way to Wapiti Lake almost to that ranger cabin. Didn't see any on the southern end between Mist Creek and the trailhead. But, that doesn't mean they aren't there. Take all normal bear precautions.
