New here. I live in western Washington. I'm on this site to get some stoke for summer. I've been an avid hiker/ backpacker since high school ( about 20 years ago). I'm also interested in bikepacking and combo bike/ hike trips. I love to find forest service roads that are closed to vehicles for the summer due to damage from the winter. A long bike ride on a closed road to the trail head almost guarantees solitude .
Thanks, see you all around!

Hey Jack, welcome. I was a western WA guy for years, loving the places in the Cascades (I was in Seattle, it was easy to get to great places with short drives.) Of course I also went everywhere else, from Vancouver BC, Olympics, Rainier, and even a little North Cascades.
Now I hang out in the Sierra, but I look forward tou your trip reports from places I may recognize there in Washington.

Hi and welcome. While I've never done a combo hike/bike trip I have done some dreaming about hiking/biking across Michigan's UP on the rarely used forest service roads. I too am looking forward to your trip reports.

Welcome! I like the bike/hike combo idea.
Are you related to Captain Jack? Or Smackwater Jack?

Yup. I've got a Burly trailer. Hauls my kids and my gear. ( not at the same time) Heavy feeling though. Not ideal for big climbs. I need to invest in some bikepacking specific gear. The weight distribution would be much better.

WhiskeyJack, Greetings from western Oregon, near Eugene. I carry my bike with me sometimes, mostly out of habit I suppose. Years ago when I was obsessed with steelhead fishing out of a drift boat I used it for shuttling. Now I ride trails, and forest roads like yourself. This forum should give you the stokes you're looking for.
What are you riding there? Is that a full suspension bike?
enjoy.

I've been to Bend a few times, one of my favorite places. I'm riding a Salsa El Mariachi , a steel, hard tail. Love it!

It's fun to get around, but there is plenty enough to do in Washington for more than a lifetime. I haven't spent much time up there, but I did spend one summer by Burlington (Mt. Vernon). At the time it was the wettest summer on record, cold too.

Dang, who's the guy who rides his bike to trailheads? Now living in Montana...my mind is going. Might have something to do with Friday night.
We're scheduled to do a different kind of approach in a couple of weeks: we'll be using public transit to get to the dock for the ferry to Angel Island, where we'll camp overnight (a couple of miles' walk from the ferry landing) before heading back. With 6 teens.
