Where's a good place to get nylon straps for lashing things to the outside of your pack? I tried Big 5, and was met by blank stares. Sport Chalet and Sports Authority are both picked clean at this point. I figure a Dick's or REI would have them, but they're both kinda far from the house. Any ideas? Thanks.

Make your own? Light weight cordageLineLoc 3 WSR Side Release Buckles Me, I have to mini biners hooked to the outside of my pack. The biners are hooked in such a way thet they bang against each other producing a sound as my animal bell. Sometimes one of the biners holds my stream crossing shoes as I am backpacking and will go on the bear bag rope to hold the garbage bag. The other biner is a spare and is either lent out or given away, to be replaced, at least once each summer. All 10.98 pounds of my gear fits inside of my backpack.

I don't have anything to lash outside the pack, and in the past that has led to lost things, so use a pack that everything fits into. Except for my crocs - I use a carabiner to clip those near the top of the pack. I have used Knotbone bungees on my winter pack where tying snowshoes on at times is needed. www.niteize.com/collection/Tie-Downs-and-Bungees.asp

Like Almostthere, I don't put much outside my pack. When I do, the compression straps built into the pack are enough--for my shoes, and at the beginning of long trips, my share of the tent.
Used to be able to buy strapping and cord in bulk at REI. I'm not sure you can anymore.
Heck, send me your addy and I'll send you a bunch of random straps! There are a ton around here not getting used.

Very little goes on the outside of my pack and what does is held by the compression straps or hang off a 'biner.

Have you tried WallyWorld and Target? They both have a couple of aisles for camping, fishing, etc and might carry a basic item like that.

I primarily use mini-biners to attach my bladder, but still use straps for my snow shovel/ice axe. REI or Amazon online will have more than enough selection for you. I also have velcro patches for my compass and camera on my shoulder straps for quick release. They both have lanyards for extra security.
