They are all old enough to stay home alone We have just reached that point, and it's nice My husband and our at-home son didn't have the same spring break...some years we've had to skip it. This year, we left him to fend for himself, and the DH and I had 5 1/2 days in the desert. Might have been more fun with the kids, but beat the heck out of staying home!

Actually, the pic in my avatar isn't me. That's not to say I don't look funny, but... I was wondering... lol dry socks and a beanie/chullo will help. Chullos are like beanies with ear flaps, and can be tied under your chin if it's windy or you just like to keep it snugger ( rebeccad - is that a word?) to your ears. Good for keeping your ears warm. Thank you! Man, I am so glad I found you all before I went out! Do you really want to breathe that all night? Your bug net will keep them out. No, I really don't want to breathe that in all night...but it sure has to beat lymes disease?? Ha! Two biggest fears: Bears, and Lymes disease.

See? That's what happens when we do this too long. None of us thought to mention the hat one wears to bed, because we take it for granted. Anything else you take for granted that you can think to mention before Friday??

Welcome and I'm jealous! Wish my kids would beg me to backpack. It isn't anything they like or want to do. P.s. Proud mom to one Eagle Scout! First of all, you have the coolest username, and second of all, I raised two cub/boy scouts and they both quit before Eagle. Congrats to you! Ps. Proud mom of a Navy sailor! (Miss that boy)

So, my non-backpacking family is now sending me news articles of fatal or near-fatal bear attacks. Just why???

They are trying to burden you with THEIR fears.

So, my non-backpacking family is now sending me news articles of fatal or near-fatal bear attacks. Just why??? People will do that sort of thing. As DD says, they're giving you their fears. The good thing is, you can look at those bear attack stories, sort out the ones that aren't griz attacks (you aren't in grizzly country, IIRC), and see that it leaves almost none, and those are usually about someone with a tent full of half-eaten candy bars or something. Or idiots who tried to pet the cute bear cub. I've hiked and backpacked in bear country all my life and gosh, I'm still here! It's a lot more amazing that I've driven thousands and thousands of miles and I'm still here.

Anything else you take for granted that you can think to mention before Friday?? I don't care if it's only one night. Unless you are post-menopausal, wherever you may be in your cycle go prepared to have the period from hell. It's one of murphey's laws. And socks. Wear socks to bed.

You'll pick up ticks hiking during the day just as easily as sleeping at night. Sure, no one in their right mind wants Lyme disease, but there's only so much you can do about it. We live sorta in the woods and I get ticks all the time. I just pull 'em off, but that's just me. HYOH. I think that "they" say that if you pull them off in 24 hours you should be OK, but don't take my word for it. Soon they will ask if you'll be carrying a sidearm. Roll your eyes and tell them "Real backpackers carry machetes." Just kidding... In my opinion, and just off the top of my pointy head, your biggest fears should be something like hypothermia and safe water. Others may post both their reasonable and neurotic worries, and they may be different.
