Actually, the pic in my avatar isn't me. That's not to say I don't look funny, but... @bjaye , dry socks and a beanie/chullo will help. Chullos are like beanies with ear flaps, and can be tied under your chin if it's windy or you just like to keep it snugger ( rebeccad - is that a word?) to your ears. Good for keeping your ears warm. I picked one up in Bolivia last year, but if you look hard enough you can probably find a good one here in the U.S. If you keep your extremities warm then your body doesn't have to work as hard. Your body will try to keep your core (heart, lungs, kidneys, etc.) warm at the expense of "non-essential" things like hands and feet - basically, your extremities are last on the priority list. Feet and hands generally aren't a big deal since they're inside your bag if you're cold, but heat loss from your head can be a biggie. And don't put your face in your bag to warm up. It'll seem warm for a while due to the elevated temperature of your breath, but you'll just be adding condensation inside your bag in addition to the condensation inside your tent. If your hands or feet are cold put on DRY socks/gloves/mittens.

See? That's what happens when we do this too long. None of us thought to mention the hat one wears to bed, because we take it for granted. Now you know why all those old pictures show people in gowns and nightcaps, and I don't mean the alcoholic type. Used to be everyone slept in a hat all the time, because there was no central heating!

We interrupt this thread for a mini mystery: Who can figure out why the tag @reuben fails, but reuben works? No prizes, but when I see people tagging and the tag isn't working, I wonder if the tagger wonders?

He's an international man of mystery. Either that or because he's a personal and social failure.

Spraying my gear down with Permethrin Insect Repellent. I've been warned that ticks are really bad this year. Do you really want to breathe that all night? Your bug net will keep them out.

Crawford shakes head in confusion to Admin question. @reuben did not work but he knows not why. He looks across the classroom at rebeccad and quietly longs to know but is afraid to show his ignorance. He sits silently, unwilling to admit he knows nothing of how such things works...then throws the tablet against the wall and exclaims, "Darn Technology!" I may not win for knowing anything, but I might win in the catagory of ridiculous response.

I checked Stop looking under my kilt. But thanks for the smiley face, even if you had to lie.

Welcome and I'm jealous! Wish my kids would beg me to backpack. It isn't anything they like or want to do.
P.s. Proud mom to one Eagle Scout! :D

We interrupt this thread for a mini mystery: Who can figure out why the tag @reuben fails, but reuben works? No prizes, but when I see people tagging and the tag isn't working, I wonder if the tagger wonders? Easy. In previous manifestations of these forums, Reuben signed up with and used the name reubenstump. That is also the name he used when he signed up for the "Freeforum" version of the forums. So that is his username. After signing up under that name, he then shortened his moniker to reuben. So that is his display name and that is what is shown when someone tags reubenstump. Am I right? Am I right?

Welcome and I'm jealous! Wish my kids would beg me to backpack. It isn't anything they like or want to do. We never gave ours any choice I was gratified when Eldest Son said, while we were discussing his availability for work this summer, that he really LIKES to backpack with us, and would be bummed to miss it. Second Son is okay missing the backpacking if he gets to travel the world, but thinks he'd like to do more backpacking with us, too. So I guess the infant indoctrination worked

We never gave ours any choice Well, we took plenty of camping trips and day hikes when they were growing up. My son did some backpacking when he was in Scouts. My husband and I started backpacking together 3 years ago and my kids weren't interested. It's fine. They are all old enough to stay home alone (2 adults and 1 high schooler).
