I can't swear to that, but I think someone has. I know a number of people around here have done it after knee replacement. Did you ask over in the TH Register? More people read that, and maybe you can shake some info out of the woodwork.

My husband's doctor frowned upon it...it may have to do with carrying the weight of the hip belt right on the affected area. So that, combined with my husband's failure to lose some weight, has caused me to cancel our first backpacking permit (next week)since his surgery. I was going to carry the bear can and the tent and he could carry my ridgerest.
He does dayhike, though, and was doing light hiking just a month after his hip replacement.

Depends on the patient and prescribed THA (Total Hip Arthoplasty) implanted. Some devices are designed for younger patients with an active life style, other patients just need a system to reduce pain and stay ambulatory. If the patient has a cemented system or had a THA revision surgery, that would exclude them from pursuing hiking.
I know many with THA who still ski 20+ times per year. Recently Paul George, age 61 summitted Mount Everest with (2) Total Knees, a left and a right.
The major risk factor with a total hip is dislocation of the femoral head from the acetabular cup. Most dislocations are caused by overweight patients who don't follow the doctors recommendation to get exercise and loose weight.
A press fit medial/lateral hip stem design for a system using vitamin E treated, highly cross-linked, UHMWPE (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene) for the acetabular cup liner combined with training/exercise program would be totally feasible and achieveable.

Westy I didn't follow all that, but the conclusion seems positive . I'm glad to hear it, as hips are probably somewhere in my future (hopefully 20 years on or something, but it could be sooner).
