Plans are to be in the Chambersburg area early June. If I get some time off, is there some place nearby for a good day hike? If nothing else, I guess I could swing over to Caledonia SP and hike a bit of the AT. Mmmm, rocks.

Looking for strictly natural? And what distance are you willing to travel?

What are you looking for, views, streams, waterfalls, wildlife, flowers, solitude? There's plenty in the area.

Can't go too far...longer drive would mean less time outside. Views, streams, waterfalls, solitude are all nice.

Here are some ideas. Heading west, you can reach various tracts of Buchanan State Forest, Cowans Gap, and of course some state game lands. From Cowans Gap you can do nice loop on the Tuscarora and Standing Stone Trails. Or you can take the Tuscarora south to the Big Mountain overlook. You can make a couple of loops around Big Mountain also. North of Cowans Gap you can take the Tuscarora along the same mountain north of Fannettsburg-Burnt Cabins Rd; a rough, wild, and scenic section. South is the Tuscarora Trail in SGL #124. I prefer the southern part better, from Fort Davis(?) Rd. A touch further west, just past McConnellsburg is Meadow Grounds (Lake) in SGL #53. There's a trail heading down a ravine to a nice small waterfall, plus a second, and perhaps better, one about 500 ft downstream via bushwhacking. As you start to approach Breezewood, you have Sideling Hill. I very much like the trails in the Roaring Run area on the south side of US30. A different loop can be made with some light bushwhacking going through the old turnpike tunnel. To the north you have Tuscarora State Forest. Flat Rock is a nice and popular hike. The Masland Natural Area is a more serene hike. Further off to the north and northwest is Trough Creek State Park and parts of the Standing stone Trail (think Throne Room, 1000 Steps, or Rocky Ridge Natural Area.) To the east, as you apparently know, is Michaux State Forest, which including nearby state parks and game lands has at least 800 miles of trail to explore. Good well known loop hikes include Hosack Run, Chimney Rock, and Sunset Rocks. There are also lesser-known, but IMO nicer options such as the Mont Alto/Narrows area, the Two Reservoirs, Dead Woman Hollow, and numerous vistas cardinal north of Pine Grove Furnace. These are on unmarked trails, so some navigation skills are required but I'm willing to share routes. Be sure to check out Mid Atlantic Hikes which contains some of these trails. My photo album also shows off all of these hikes (and plenty others but further away from C-burg.)
