Hi everybody!
A friend and I do everything outside together... fishing, archery, camping, heck, we even tried our hand at smithing. We have decided that this summer we want to get into backpacking and hammock camping.
We are looking for a relatively short overnight trail to start, just to test our gear and ourselves. We would REALLY prefer it if the trail led to either a river or lake where it is legal to fish. It would also be preferable if we didn't have to drive more than three hours. (Shenandoah is in our limit.) Both of us are relatively fit and have done day hiking before. We are both up for wading, climbing, etc. if necessary.
Does anyone know of any trails in the area that match the description we are looking for? If so, what permits would be required?
Thanks,
ZitoDragon

Well,in the mountains, most of the areas I can think of,the best lakes/fishing are going to be at the trailhead areas rather at the final destination. One idea,Sugar Hollow/C'ville Reservoir hiking up to Blue Hole or north along the north fork of the Moormans.Other ideas ,Lake Sherando area,Peaks of Otter area,or one of my favorites the Camp Rapidan/Hoover area in the central district of the SNP.Jeremys Run in the northern district of the SNP would also probably meet your requirements but might be over 3 hours of driving.
ETA One other idea that would probably be the most ideal for a beginner trip would be Ramseys Draft Wilderness about 20 miles west of Stauton.I didn't mention it originally since it is is well west of SNP,but from the outskirts of Hampton Roads it shouldn't be much over 3 hours. You could go in a short distance with multiple stream crossings and set up.
