Thank you for sharing. I laughed because my husband has to stand guard too. He did reverse psychology not realizing other than actually sleeping outside. I'd spent my life hiking and backpacking with my daddy. Even though dad & I went home, we always had gear "just in case". Anyway, he told me how awful it was, bugs, tent, no shower and of course I intended to prove him wrong. I love it. Shower is fixed by dunking hair in river, and brining a wash cloth & baby wipes - lol!

Hint... you don't have to be so concerned about your appearance out in the woods. Or ever, for that matter. Be au naturel and just do it.

I had to smile reading that, because I was at least as avid a backpacker as my husband when we got married, so there was none of the need to persuade me to deal with it.
Hiking women jump in a lake, haul a load, and don't sweat the hat hair.
Funny, too. I started my adult backpacking career hiking with assorted mostly male friends, in various sized groups. I got used early on to mixed-company skinny-dipping.

Wyoming, Where men are men and women are too. I was out visiting a Thunder Basin jobsite with a friend last night, where I noticed a sign like below. Just a couple letters in black electrical tape were added to the sign:

Giving this a bump in memory of my mom, who took me on my first hikes before I was one year old. And this was before baby carriers or snugglies--she just carried me on her hip! Dad was a ranger at D. L. Bliss State Park in Tahoe, and she made as far as Velma Lake carrying me when I was about 10 months old. That's a long steep hike. Pretty amazing. Here she is with our whole sick crew. I'm the little one in overalls in front.

balzaccom , you'd appreciate this from my husband's infancy. I've posted it before, but it does seem right here: I gather it was a wire laundry basket, with a cardboard sunshade.
