I will be hiking Rim to Rim to Rim next week. The night I'm camping on the North Rim, it's "officially" still closed. Although I called and emailed the backcountry office, I have been unable to get answers to the following: - Which of the seasonal faucets are currently turned on?
- If the faucets are off, is there reliable surface water at Cottonwood? How about the North Rim?
Thanks very much,
Steve

Cottonwood has a year round stream, no problem! A year ago spent a night at Bright Angel CG (Phantom Ranch) lots of water, flush toilets. Coming up the Bright Angel to Indian Gardens, faucets available. South Kaibab has no water till Phantom Ranch. Top of North Rim would plan for no water.

Thanks! I wish there was water on the North Rim so I wouldn't have to haul it all up from Cottonwood.

Enjoy your hike! Are you going down South Kaibab, obviously up North Kaibab and returning via Bright Angel?

Yep, that's the route. I'd actually prefer to try the Escalante Route, but I've never been on the North Rim so I gotta do it once in my life.

My favorite in and out trail on the North Rim is the North Bass Trail. Have a list of multi-day North Rim routes to do. Did the Escalante Route November 2014, very enjoyable, liked ascending the New Hance Trail. Let us know how it goes and have fun.
PS. Kaibab squirrels and ravens are aggressive and relentless at Bright Angel Campground. Like the airport, do not leave your pack unattended!

My favorite in and out trail on the North Rim is the North Bass Trail I wish there was a way to cross the Colorado to the South Bass. (I've never been to either)

Reprise on water: I did Rim To Rim To Rim last week and there was water everywhere. Cottonwood was on. Manzanita was on. Even Supai Tunnel had been turned on just hours before we arrived. The water at the North Kaibab Trailhead was on. The North Rim Campground, though officially closed, had water on (nobody could tell us if this would be the case). Even the bathhouse was open (women only, men was locked for some reason).
Even if the water wasn't on, Bright Angel Creek was flowing well, not to mention Ribbon Falls, Roaring Spring and Indian Garden Creek.

I wish there was a way to cross the Colorado to the South Bass. (I've never been to either) Some hikers descend the South Bass and hitch-hike the river runners (private permit) a short distance downriver to the North Bass. It's fairly easy to score a ride, if you have the time. Most then hike the Tonto formation back to Phantom Ranch and out via Bright Angel.
