Welcome to the forums. I hike the Sierra, but would love to hear about hiking in your neck of the woods.

Ruben, you forgot about the penguin that loves ice cream! Gasp! How could I?!?! I owe you a triple scoop. Bowl? Sugar cone? Waffle cone? How about a crepe to go with it?

I'm probably missing a few, but I know we've got a hiking tiger, a lame beaver, a newt, and now a sloth. Quite the menagerie. Has Marmotstew been around?

I remembered Marmie, but since he was turned into stew years ago, I figured he wasn't among the land of the living.

Canoeing in... Algonquin? Kawartha? QEW? Killarney? French River? Bon Echo? Other? From the Big Smoke, but goin' all the way up there fer campin' learnin'? What're ya doin' learnin' up in 'Toba, ya hoser? Don't ya know us Ontari'ns knows it best? And them west-coasters knows it second best, but not the farmers, b'y. Algonquin ! My friends and I really don't know what we're doing so we did a pretty introductory trip... Put in at Rock Lake and camped on the island on the far side. Then just did some short trips to Pen Lake for fun throughout the days. Tried fishing but all that was open was trout and let's just say we weren't the only ones looking. You guys are a riot! Thanks for the welcomes and copious amounts of advice re: alcohol

That's a pretty good trip. I'm not much of a canoer. I'll voluntarily take up designated portager if it means missing out on having to paddle.
Algonquin's a nice park, I try to avoid the high-season though as it is sort of the 'go-to' for many. I like the Rain Lake access, it's both a trailhead for the Western Uplands trail and a launching point for canoes. The waterway and trail run parallel for a while and it looks like a nice relaxing paddle, if you're looking for another paddle trip. The section of the Western Uplands out of there is great for beginner backpackers; it follows an old rail bed for about 7km helping you to get into the groove of backpacking with relatively easy hiking. Beyond that it gets into the typically rough and tiresome highlands-type terrain.
If y'all don't already have one, I strongly recommend a Jeff's Algonquin map. The western area one has much of the canoe thoroughfares as well as the Western Uplands and Highland backpacking trails. I've done solid chunks of the former and both loops on the latter (as day hikes), so I can give you some decent Algonquin backpacking beta if you ever need any.
If you want to get into off-trail backpacking, 'Toba is about the closest you'll find that isn't imminently frustrating. The province-wide tangle of dense underbrush throughout Ontario (and Quebec) makes off-trail travel particularly trying and hampers map/compass navigation. This is one of the reasons why backcountry canoe routes significantly outnumber hiking trails/routes (of the selection of parks I listed, only three offer trails of any considerable length).

Welcome prov3rb. Nice to see another Canuck on the boards! I'm in Toronto and hike and paddle Algonquin frequently so if you have any questions or want some route suggestions, don't hesitate to ask. And I concur with amaruq on the quality of Jeff's Maps for planning a trip to Algonquin or Killarney Provincial Parks. Rumour is the Algonquin staff use them rather than the in-house ones. They are available for free online use here. www.algonquinmap.com/As far an Manitoba backcountry, better you than me! Isn't the mosquito the Official Provincial Bird?
