I have recently been enjoying taking a lot of hikes and I would like to take it to the next level and do a hike followed by some overnight camping. - Looking for suggestions for a backpacking hike in the 6-10 mile range followed by camping the night.
- Want to take my dog.
- Can either be a camp site or camping solo, but I am not looking for a camp site with RVs. I want it to be a bit more back to nature.
- Would like to find something on some sort of water source, stream, river or lake.
- Prefer to find something in RI, as I live here. But Mass or CT will work. Northern New England could also work if it had some great spot.
If anyone has any advice on a good location for this type of backcountry hike, it would be greatly appreciated.

Established wilderness campsites in RI / Southeastern MA are hard to find. You could hike the Mid-State trail in Douglas/Mendon MA but no real established sites. A place that barely fits your criteria is Sages Ravine on the AT on the CT/MA line. Awesome place with a few different approaches but probably too far away.
There are a few lean-to shelters on the Mid-State trail between Mt. Wachusset and Mt Watatic in MA. It's not ridiculously far and your dog would be fine. I don't remember if the lean-tos were near water though.
Steve PS: There are no established campsites at all on the Warner Trail in SE Mass.

I don't necessarily need it to be an established spot. Part of me wants to do a hike and just find a place to camp. I have a tent. western Connecticut wouldn't be too bad. I was looking at that area the other day. I just don't want to go somewhere and find out camping or campfires or my dog are not allowed.

I actually may have just found my first spot. Arcadia near me has a small tent campsite right near a trail I did last week. I thought the dog was going to be an issue but I just called them and they said both The dog and a fire are fine.

No fires allowed in Connecticut (at least on the Appalachian Trail, but maybe more)
