Do we have a designated place for gear talk? i know that bringing up such a subject amongst so many knowledgeable, well read, highly intelligent, and experienced individuals who represent the very pinnacle of what one needs to know to survive comfortably in the wild will be able and willing to mentor those who might need it.
That being said, I think all things gear related should be encouraged to be placed in this thread. I believe it would not only benefit us all as to what to pack when planning on a trip to Vedauwoo for a few days of bumming around, or to Mississippi on the Tuxachanie Trail or the Black Creek Trail.
In any event, I am beginning to think I have shot myself in the foot with a purchase I made a couple of years ago. I got a Mountain Hardwear Optic 2.5 for when me and the Missus were traveling and we would set it up for overnight stays until we got to the campground and set up the big tent, a really old Cabela Alaskan Guide for 6 people. My other intention was to use the Optic for backpacking expeditions, but it is a tad heavy. It looks like my better looking half likes car camping and day hikes, she does not go for the multi day carry food and maybe not get to bath for a few days thing.
I like the REI Quarter Dome UL2, but they only warrant it for a year. Don't think a single wall would work well down here due to the constant humidity. Definitely need a double wall tent.
I have looked at BA, but nothing they have really twists my crank, as they say.

There is a forum for gear talk named The Gear Closet. It is in the Skills and Wisdom section of the forums. Go to the top and place your cursor on Backpacker's Basecamp. A menu will drop down with the Skills and Wisdom section listed third. Place cursor on that section and to the side will appear another menu with The Gear Closet listed first.

PS: That REI Quarter Dome is a damn fine tent. I would not worry about the warranty. YMMV

Do we have a designated place for gear talk? Among the various forums at BP Basecamp is the Gear Closet under Skills and Wisdom. I don't spend much time there in the Gear Closet, but it's been a very active forum through the years.

maybe not get to bath for a few days thing. Creeks and lakes. Just don't use soap.

Don't think a single wall would work well down here due to the constant humidity. Definitely need a double wall tent. I live in Florida, and use my REI Half Dome for kayaking excursions. No issues, certainly not any that a double wall would solve. Ventilation is the key. Learn to set up the tent so the most ventilation possible blows through, and that condensation you seem to be concerned about is of little concern.

I briefly had a Half Dome. It was quite big for one person, but zeke is fairly tall, and when kayaking weight isn't much of an issue.
I use smaller tents now, but I'm largely land-based.
