Although I've live near the park, I'm not that familiar with early season hiking in the south-east portion. What's the earliest you reckon a guy could hike into Heart Lake and exit via the Snake River Trail? Am I going to be post holing through snow or wading through a swamp? Also, is it all feasible to climb Avalanche Peak in May? I think I know the answer to that one.
Thanks.

I've done Avalanche in early June with a light snow year. We are supposed to have above average precip into if not through July now.
In 1975 I road a horse on top of Big Game Ridge the third week of June. Wasn't good Jer. It takes a long time to get to the Thorofare, Bridger Lake, etc. I wouldn't do it, we had 60" of snow last week of May 2005 just a thousand feet above the Ranch.
Northern part of the Park is much lower elevation.
I however will be going into the Soda Fork in a couple of weeks over the weekend weather permitting if you are interested. Not all that different, just 6 miles in instead of 36.
