It looks like I may have to make a last minute trip change to do weather... was planning on Nantahala Mountains, NC next week. I am looking at any and all alternative options. Looking for 30-40 Miles, 4-5 days with 5 people (3 tents). Maybe Indiana, Kentucky. We are open, coming from MI and are willing to drive up to about 10 hours but would prefer slightly less.
Thank you for any suggestions.

Thanks! Do you need permits for this hike? Can you camp anywhere? And what is the closest city to the trail head you recommend?

Sorry, it's been too many years since I did that trip and I had an outfitter shuttle me to the trail head I used. I hiked south into the Red River Gorge. If you'll go here Sheltwowee Trace forums you'll find all the information you'll need. Even downloadable topo maps. I didn't get to climb them but I heard that the Indian Staircase is really cool.

Check out the Big South Fork area in north central TN. There are many trails offering all types of loop hikes, ample water, and rugged topography with little visitation.
Any thoughts about High Country Pathway?

High Country Pathway is about a 70 mile loop trail in northern lower Michigan. I've never done it but I've heard good things about it. You'll get to walk through the area that the only elk herd in michigan lives. www.us23heritageroute.org/greenway.asp?ait=cv&cid=26

Thanks Hungry Jack , I'll have a set of new pictures to share after this weekend but not from here. It's time for my spring hike in Manistee.
