And yet the only way to fail is stop trying.
On the up side, if I ever find someone the shoes fit I can sell them. Or just wear them around town for short things.... I don't even know that many men with bigger feet than me, tho.
I suppose the bunions could get to the point that I get surgery and my feet get narrow again?
I'd like to be one of those older folks who just keeps hiking without issues, but I'm not even that old and already having them, so. OH WELL.

Something tells me that if your parents didn't have bunions, you'll be fine....

I'd like to be one of those older folks who just keeps hiking without issues, but I'm not even that old and already having them, so. OH WELL. Ebay - I've found some terrific deals on gear there. Sold a bunch of stuff too. Suggestion regarding foot issues, in an earlier age, I used to be a boot fitter. If you are having foot issues you may want to make sure all your other footwear fits properly, especially if you have a family history of foot issues. It may be worth going to a podiatrist for fit recommendations as well. Footwear is a whole package, the socks, insoles (critical to my feet) and the shoe or boot. Sometimes a professional fitting is the only way to go. Problem is........finding someone who really knows what they're doing, and how to fit YOUR foot. Now that I've taken this thread COMPLETELY in the wrong direction.............. Sorry about that!

Footwear is a whole package, the socks, insoles (critical to my feet) and the shoe or boot. A few years ago, I discovered my shoe size had increased from small yacht to mid sized yacht. After the change to a larger yacht size, I went on my merry way and discovered a new host of knee, leg, hip, and foot issues. I was at the point of either just accepting that pain would be part of my exercise or quit. It was the socks! I had not upped my socks size and when my wife bought me some new socks, based on my shoe size, my issues went away.

My podiatrist has pronounced me "as good as it'll get" and the orthotics do magic. Otherwise I'd be posting in the forum for former backpackers.
eta: not an invitation for anyone to come sabotage my orthotics....

Suggestion regarding foot issues, in an earlier age, I used to be a boot fitter Have used a boot fitter with great success. You guys are very much appreciated. Here in Salt Lake because of the ski industry lots of great fitters. Have had Garmont Telemark, Fischer Nordic Boots and Merrill Makalu's all adjusted with great satisfaction. The telemark boots were adjusted from a pronated to a balanced neutral position to match my natural foot type. The result was awesome. Both skis had an identical angle when put on edge. This resulted not only in better skiing, but reduced physical effort allowing me to ski 20% more runs before getting tired.

Backpacking Quilt Adoption Rate – Survey ResultsMe, I have decided, when I replace my sleeping bag, to switch to a down quilt as part of my gear weight reduction.

I had not upped my socks size and when my wife bought me some new socks, based on my shoe size, my issues went away. Ironically, a lot of my foot issues went away when I started buying my socks based on foot volume rather than shoe size. My very low-volume feet were swimming in the size 9 socks, which would bunch and cause blisters. Bought down a size, and bingo! A proper fit.

Me, I have decided to, when I replace my sleeping bag, to switch to a down quilt as part of my gear weight reduction. I really want to do this, not as weight reduction per se, but to get a little more warmth--and comfort--for the same weight. I haven't zipped my bag for ages.
