...you turn on your phone for the first time in months, and it shows local time ... and the time in Chile. And your blood pressure drops just thinking about it.

You really don't use that phone often, do you?

Nope. Maybe once since I got back in December. I'm seriously late on even the most skimpy TR, however. Teasers. Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia. Near the top of the Lagunas Altas (high lakes) trail in Patagonia Park, Aysen region, Chile. Excuse me, there's a guanaco in my tent.

Great pictures! At the risk of sounding like a complete bitch, I know I NEED to get out when I'm ready to kill those around me. A few hours away usually makes all the difference.

I know I NEED to get out when I'm ready to kill those around me. You have many kindred spirits here. Given my age and the BS of those around me at work, well, it ain't easy to stop myself from calling them some prolific and descriptive terms to their faces in no uncertain terms. Fortunately (and by selection) the group I work with is a good group. And there are many other good groups and good people to be found. A few hours away usually makes all the difference. It's all that keeps me sane. We're lucky enough to live in a woodsy area with a bunch of land. I've told my wife and friends many times that a good weekend is one in which I never leave our land - I don't drive a vehicle, I don't shop, I don't see anyone but my wife and my dog. I work around the house, shed, gardens, drink beer in the shed ("aircraft hangar"), listen to music, and grow my little veggie seedlings, many of which are heading out to the garden these days. I've never really liked hustle and bustle, cities, or such things, and the older I get the less I like them, and the more I try to simplify my life, within the constraints I have.

Ah, but there is a totally different kind of peace and serenity found in an art museum. I can wander a nice art show for hours, and come out feeling like I have spent the time in the woods.

Those are some great photos, bud. I'm looking forward to more.
As to the topic at hand. I'm glad to be getting out this weekend. Just a single tent-night, but it'll be enough to take the edge off the nonstop projects of late.

Ah, but there is a totally different kind of peace and serenity found in an art museum. I can wander a nice art show for hours, and come out feeling like I have spent the time in the woods. Doesn't begin to help me. Maybe if I had the museum to myself. But I in fact start to go nuts within about 30-40 minutes in most. Too much sensory input, too many people, and too much standing instead of moving. I know I need to get out when I a) want to strangle people, and/or b) can't stop thinking, talking, and planning for a trip.

It's time for me to go hiking when my hiking boots magically appear by the door. This happens every weekend.

... when the sun is shining and the forecast is golden - and you don't have to wait for a weekend. Man, it's fun being retired and have backpacking/hiking as a passion.
