I have an upcoming trip to Zion right around the corner and I am starting to second guess my shoe choices.
Typically on day hikes of 15-16 miles, I go with trail runners. However, after trying backpacking in the same shoes, I realized I needed more sole to handle the extra weight load. I have a great pair of hiking boots that I like a lot, but, well, they are BOOTS.
My latest brainstorm is to invest in some Smartfeet or similar insoles for my proven trail shoes to provide extra support. Has anyone tried this and did the insoles give you enough extra support or is it a losing battle? I know it won't give my shoes a stiffer sole, but maybe it will help keep my feet more stable on uneven terrain? Up until last year I never hiked in boots, but the terrain in Yosemite kicked my ass and convinced me to get a pair, and now I don't want to hike in them (even though they are comfortable and supportive- my feet like to breath and they just feel heavy/clunky/hot in boots). I know the terrain at Zion is less challenging than Yosemite, and I have previously hiked 32+ miles in 2 days in Zion with no problems in the shoes I am thinking of adding the insoles to, but that was with a daypack, not a 30lb backpack. However, I will suck it up and wear them if it's going to be a complete failure with the insole idea. Thanks in advance!

Define "boot". Huge heavy honkin' leather with quasi-iron sole? Something like Asolo? Or just heavier sole, slightly taller (ankle or just above) with cloth upper, like many of the Merrell boots. Whatever you end up using, be sure to break them in first, even if it's just 2 hour hikes on weekends.

I wear a pr of Columbia trail shoes (low quarters) with Green Superfeet in them. Works for me, even on 60 mile BP trips. I will add this though. If The Narrows is on your list, that was the toughest trail I ever walked. It is constant walking on softball to basketball sized rocks hidden from view by flowing water. I wore an old pr of boots and trashed them as soon as I got to the car. Even new insoles couldn't help with that trip. I had new insoles in the boots and managed to save them when I tossed the boots, but the boots were history.

I have Keen Liberty Ridge boots that I would use. I also have a pair of Merrell Moabs that are lightweight but I used them in the barn all winter so they are pretty trashed. The Keens are broken in already though, they've been used for a couple of weekend trips and a lot of day hikes. They are leather, with a pretty stiff sole (especially when compared to the more tennis shoe feel of the Moabs).
Zeke, I did the Narrows top down route last time as a day hike, so I won't be doing it again! Totally agree with the softball description! We are doing the Trans Zion Hike this time and a day hike through Subway canyon. Thanks for the feedback on the Superfeet. I might just get a pair now and do a nice day hike with my pack and see how it shakes out. Unfortunately, it's very had to replicate terrain and distance on a training hike, hence my hesitation.

I hiked down from La Verkin Creek to Hop Valley, then from Lava Point to Angel's Landing and on to the valley floor. 3 nights out, with wife and another couple, back nearly 15 years ago. Did not do any East Rim that trip, other than up to Observation Point as a day hike.

Did not do any East Rim that trip, other than up to Observation Point as a day hike. That's the route we are planning as well...La Verkin Creek to the Grotto and ending there. Logistically it's difficult to end on the east side of the park without an extra car to spot there and we will only have the one that we need to leave in Springdale. We are hoping to do it in 2 nights. It's a bit of an aggressive itinerary, but we've done the same distances in the past with no issue. Fingers crossed!

We did it in 3, with nights at junction with Hop Valley, Lava Point, and Campsite #9 on the West Rim trail. We were 50, and had no rush.
