I am planning a trip to CO this September, this will be the first group trip I've been on in a VERY long time. There will be a range of experience levels, but I think everyone in the group has done at least some backpacking. We're hoping for 4-5 days, preferably not much more that a 3 hour drive from the Denver airport, though I'm sure we'd be willing to drive a little further if there were a compelling reason. I prefer Wilderness to National Park, and I figure we'll be hiking around 8-10 miles a day. a 30-40 mile loop would be great. A few opportunities to wet a line would be a huge plus. CWeston's suggestion of the Gore Range in another thread sounds like a possibility. Any others come to mind?

Trinity,
It's not a loop but the Comanche-Venable Trailhead fits your 3 hour criteria [without any I25 problems] and IMO gives some of the most spectacular hiking you will find ANYWHERE. If you could arrange a shuttle going from this trailhead near Westcliffe over the Range to the South Crestone Trailhead near Crestone you would be PSYCHED. More like 20 miles without side trips, but rugged and REWARDING. You could do a loop if you addin the Rainbow Trail. That trail however is NOT wilderness, you might see ATVs on weekends.
I'm not sure how this place works so if you want pics message me and I'll link you to facebook gallery. Otherwise backcountrypost.com is easier for me, Absarokanaut there too.
Check out Comanche Peaks Wilderness, NEver Summer Range, etc. too.

Thanks, Absarokanaut. I found your album Colorado's Sangre de Cristo Range on your FB page, looks really amazing! That's one of the places I've been wanting to get to, so I'll definitely look into this area.
