We're looking at a trip there in Feb of 2017, and would love some input from someone who's been there...

balzaccom, I stayed there for a couple of days about 5 years ago. A little place just outside of town. Sorry, I forget the name. Trails just take off from the edge of town. From recent experience further north and talking with friends it's been warmer than normal the last 4 years. You'll love the scenery and hiking. Just be prepared for lots of people on the trails. Water isn't usually hard to find, but you may want to filter it for silt, or at least let it settle a while, unless you find a clear stream.

Yes I've been to El Chalten. Took the bus from El Calafate. (3 hrs) Great place. I stayed in hostel and simply walked out the door and started hiking. Lots of nice day hikes and world class spectacular views. In fact the scenery there was in some ways better than Torres del Paine. It was not excessively crowded. Trivia: FitzRoy was the captain of Darwin's sheep the Beagle.) I boarded a bus in El Chalten at 8 am, transferred in El Calafate and made it to Puerto Natales that same evening. You might consider making reservations at a hostel before you head there. I could have spent a week there hanging out and hiking. Don't miss the seafood restaurants in Puerto Natales.
