Hi Everyone,
As you may have guessed from the Subject title of this thread I am planning on 'thru-hiking' the Continental Divide Trail in April 2017! Even though it is 12 months away I have started the planning process already as I'm sure many of you know there is a lot to do beforehand.
I am 29 years old, live and work in London, UK and am taking a career break next year to fulfill a life long dream. In terms of previous experience I have trekked across Costa Rica (east to west) alongside undertaking numerous other small scale expeditions in the US and Europe.
Although I have friends and family that are planning on coming out to join me for periods of the trek, I would love to get in contact with anyone else that is also crazy enough to consider doing the thru-hike either partially or in its entirety with me!
Thanks for taking the time to read this message and fingers crossed there is someone else out there who might be looking to do the CDT next year too :-)!
Ed

Welcome to the forums and good luck finding others with similar interests. I'm curious of whether you've ever backpacked in the Rocky Mountains before. I suspect you'll find this project much more difficult than anything you mention.
Seems to me that finding others with experience in Rocky Mountain backpacking would be essential to your planning. Good luck.

Howdy! First step would be logistics, meaning getting the required permits and figuring out your resupply points. The CDT has much less traffic than the PCT and AT, and there are not as many towns near the trail. I do wish you the best of luck and who knows, may we'll meet on the trail, as I do visit some portions occasionally. I'm assuming you're already aware of this website: continentaldividetrail.org/

'thru-hiking' the Continental Divide Trail in April 2017 2018! Been sussing out comprehensive details the past six months and well advanced in project development stage. Target launch is April 2018. Have all the Bear Creek and Ley maps. Bear Creek has download custom CDT waypoints on my Oregon 600 GPS. Sorted out (3) route plans that reconcile to Beacon's Data Book and Bear Creek data base. Executed comprehensive Pilot Trek last year to determine re-supply best practices and field test primary kit components such as rucksack, clothing, footwear, stove, fuel and food. Currently working on identifying potential tactical risks whilst validating re-supply points. Breakfast and dinner menu complete and 50% thru Goods Inwards and in Stores. Kit List is 95% complete. Still need to designate tent. Presently have formal request to an OEM for a factory modified custom feature. Everything else trail-tested and good to go. A few minor bits remain. Behind schedule on creating a bounce box plan. Have established comprehensive cost projections. Be mindful of hearts and flowers accounts bogged down in personal minutiae and also kit list recommendations from sponsored hikers. Both belong in the dust bin. For the fact's, the best resource is YogiI would be willing to share planning details with you. If interested send a private message.

It's probably the most difficult of the Big 3 in North America and the snow can always linger. Here's a blog of a woman who recently completed it last year: carrotquinn.com/cdt-2015-2/She and others had to flip due to some late snow in 2015. Then again Joe V, now owner of Zpacks gear in the USA, thru-hiked it in Teva sandals. www.zpacks.com/adventures/cdt_gear.shtml

Westy That is really cool to read you are going to attempt the CDT. Will you have a journal or BLOG?

Thanks Ohm! The planning process is detailed and daunting. Will you have a journal or BLOG? Neither. The challenge will be hiking the 18-20 miles per day and maintaining a laser beam, mental focus on the task at hand. Zero days will be true zero days. Recording a journal or creating and updating a blog are non-value added transactions outside the scope of the mission. Documenting a lessons learned or "What I would do differently" personal assessment is a normal HYOH protocol action for me. Sharing a Trip Report for the Forum members consisting of a condensed overview and photos with brief captions would be expected. The helicopter journalistic style exhibited in the majority of journals and blogs takes the adventure out of the activity. I prefer to discover the adventure for myself rather than experience it vicariously through a milk & cookies journal or blog.
