Zeke linked a similar article a few days ago. As I said there, I've used an inexpensive fabric sport tape for decades on the back of my heels. That combined with synthetic-fiber socks and well-fitted boots has kept me from getting any blisters for several years. Duct tape has often been mentioned but I find sport tape more convenient. I wrap a couple feet around a small Bic lighter for ease of carrying. It's not so sticky and thus easier to handle than Duct tape.

We put in a credit-card sized piece of plastic for use as a scraper (bee stingers, etc.) and wrapped it with fabric tape for hot spots.

Oops. Missed that. Looks like the same story, different publication.
I abjectly and humbly apologize to Zeke and hereby waive, relinquish, and renounce all claims to what was clearly his discovery.

Nah. I'm glad you resumed the topic. More responses this time.

LB, I think you wandered into the wrong thread As for the tape/blisters thing, I'm still scratching my head about this being some big breakthrough discovery (it was on the front page of the local news section of the SF Chron yesterday). I honestly thought everyone knew that taping hot spots before they go any farther (and pre-taping them if you know where they will be) was a good way to prevent actual blisters.

Interesting. I'm willing to give surgical tape a try but I wonder how well it actually stays put. I had to switch off of duct tape because my skin developed a reaction to it. So I started using Leukotape. LeukotapeIt will stay put for days even after getting walking in an all day rain. I know that from experience.

Get the tape that sticks to itself (but not your skin). Hmmm... I guess I'd have to try it to be certain but it seems to me that if it only sticks to itself it'd have to be wrapped around the whole foot a couple of times. Sounds bulky under a sock and a good way to start a blister in a different area. Most of my blisters are on back of the heal or at the big joint of the big toe. Hard places to tape if it only sticks to itself. But if you've used this before for blisters I'd be interested in hearing how you used it. Maybe I'm just not thinking about this right.

So I started using Leukotape. LeukotapeIt will stay put for days even after getting walking in an all day rain. I know that from experience. Yep, Leukotape works for me. I used some regular athletic tape recently and got some sort of infection - "contact dermititis". I used Leukotape for a couple of weeks in Patagonia. It stayed on, and didn't irritate anything. (OOC)
