Hey Wesley, Welcome to the forum, but a first-post pushing products is a bad idea. Hint: remove the link, join the conversations and tell people what you are up to.

I have an electronic compass. My findings with an electronic compass is accurately pointing the compass at a target. WIth my analog compass, I have line of sight reference points to the target on the compass.
The other problem I have with my electronic compass is in matching the compass meridian lines to the N-S lines drawn on the map.
Also, I would like to know if, on a digitial compass what issue is created when the compass is not held at level?
I like the digitial app in the link shows Lat and Long; quite useful.
Are you using Lat. and Long. to calculate heading? If I remember correctly, if you are not measuring the magnetic lines of force then to get heading one will need to use velocity to get heading. Means the compass will need to be moving to get a good bearing, or use the last known good bearing. Of course the internal gyros of the device could be used to determine current positional heading. If using the positional heading, from the internal gyros, what kind of drift rate do the gyros have and what is used to reset the gyros? Ah. the rotation of the earth will allow the GPS sat nav program to determine heading throough calculation. Just thinking.

Won't work when one doesn't carry a phone along.

I use Spyglass. I like it pretty well. It has a lot of functions beyond a compass, and because you sight through the phone's camera, it is easy to get accurate vectors. It includes an inclinometer, range finder, sextant, calculates areas, estimates the vertical height of things, and is useful for casual surveying. Similar to a program called Theodolite. It doesn't need to be level to work. I wouldn't use it as my primary compass in the backcountry, but it is useful in town and rural areas.

I'm struggling to figure out why a compass needs an app.

I'm struggling to figure out why a compass needs an app. My only guess is so that you can put in declination, since it is magnetic.

why a compass needs an app. Jeeze, reuben, a compass can't tell you when it's sunny! ...Oh wait, yes it can. If it casts a shadow, sunny! Likewise, if it's wet, probable rain? I could be wrong. I'm having a bit of fun with wesley, but I wish him well with his app. It's really over-think, and isn't for me but I think he will find many who will spend a dollar to try it (but I didn't download it to learn the price.) I have sure bought many apps that I discarded soon after. Good luck, wesley!

My only guess is so that you can put in declination, since it is magnetic. If your handheld analog compass doesn't have an adjustment for declination, you need a new compass. If you don't know what declination is or how to adjust for it, you know even less about using a compass than I do (which ain't much).

you can put in declination I declined the app. Is that about the same?

I declined the app. Is that about the same? You declined the application. Tigger declined the entire nation and everything in it. Which I guess is why they're deporting him to Greenland.
