Looking to do a solo backpacking trip to Watkins Glen gorge next week (4/12/16). Anyone have any info on trail conditions? Not too concerned about weather. Just availability to hike open trails along the river. ....also any suggestions on other sweet spot locations on that region?

@gradster50:
Some snow is forecast for this weekend, so they might close the gorge trail. Other State Parks in the area are Buttermilk, Taughannock, and Treman. But again, their gorge trails might be closed if icy conditions prevail. Looking at the latest forecast, I'd guess there's a 80% chance they'll be open. Call them before hand.
Were you planning on just day-tripping at Watkins Glen or backpacking along the FLT? If the gorge trails are closed, you really can't go wrong with hiking along the other sections of the FLT (which goes through all 3 parks mentioned above).
Further out you have more great options:
Hi-Tor (south end of Canandiagua Lake)... just a generally neat area Letchworth (near Mt. Morris / Geneseo)... the Grand Canyon of the East Clark Reservation, Green Lakes, or Morgan Hill (all near Syracuse). If you chose these, PM me... I live just a couple miles away.
