I don't think we've driven 50 across Nevada. But I know we went through Eureka, so I had to figure out why...I used to do craft shows in Elko and Ely. So going to Elko sent us through Eureka...did have to get gas there as we were pulling the trailer. On the way home, the gas station wasn't open. We ran out of gas just shy of Tonopah. Luckily we thought ahead and carried gas.
I did think that Hwy 50 was rather lonely from Delta UT to Nevada. We drove from Moab to Bishop, in one day, a couple years back. On the way to Moab, we did camp at Great Basin...nice in October. We first went there in 1990 and camped by the creek. It was warm and the truck's radiator boiled over just a bit, climbing the hill. And we went once to hike up Wheeler Peak. Summer, but cold up there.

aliasgrace79 already forgot about us Correct! In fact never returned after posting her question. Since her email is in her profile, I sent her a note with a link, in case she forgot where the forum even is! Meanwhile, it's been interesting to read the replies.

I did think that Hwy 50 was rather lonely from Delta UT to Nevada. Lonely isn't the word I usually use for that stretch. "Tedious" comes closer. From Delta along Sevier Lake is a 25 miles stretch without a curve, followed my a very slight curve and another 15 miles. When you finally go around the corner and start to climb the pass by Notch Peak it's such a relief. And I love the view as you come down the other side toward the Nevada border, with a view straight ahead to Wheeler Peak. There's a pull-out in that descent with access to some off-road camping spots that we've used, too.

From Delta to Skull Rock Pass there are a multitude of things to do and see: Gunnison Massacre sight, Crystal Peak, rock climbing at Painter Springs, Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge, dig trilobites, visit the Hermit's House, hike Notch Peak which has the second highest vertical cliff in the US, ancient bristlecone pines, Topaz a WWII Interment camp for Americans of Japanese descent and more. The drive maybe tedious bit the proximity of awesome rewards is close by. Lonely is good! Not much of that around anymore.

The drive maybe tedious bit the proximity of awesome rewards is close by. Yeah, I was just referring to the drive. We typically go through there on our way elsewhere, so haven't explored those things. I wasn't aware there were brislecones in that range (I knew of course about the ones on Wheeler Peak). I also like lonely roads. I love US 50, but find that either people like that sort of thing and love it, or they find it "awfully empty and boring" and hate it.

From SF area east I found US 50 interesting that those road engineers were able to place the road so as to get more long ups followed by long downs than any other long road I know. Amazing geology and no wonder they sell t-shirts about the trip as well as the emotional kick of getting your card 'punched' at every wide place on the road. EVERYBODY is glad you stopped by.

Based on my own trip in Sept a few years back, I'd say you'll have the place to yourself, pretty much.

hikerchick395: It looks like you've covered U.S. 50 in Nevada from the border to Ely to highway 376 etc. I've been looking at a couple of my maps. It's kinda hard to figure it out!!

Will do. I was wrong about the 9th, I'll be in transit from Spokane that day. I should arrive there on the 10th sometime mid-day or so.

looking at a couple of my maps. It's kinda hard to figure it out!! TIMOTEO, I haven't looked to see where Hwy 376 even is. Were you thinking of doing Hwy 50 at some time? It's a ice drive if you like distant vistas. Where does 376 go?
