I seriously loved Guatemala City, but loved the countryside and the volcanic lakes even more, but yes, even though I am so completely obviously an American tourist, I got nothing but smiles and kindness

I think, because I was with two young boys, a brother with Down's syndrome, and my Mom, we looked so non threatening, it was a decided advantage. It made parents relax and let their kids come talk to us and play with my kids, so then I had a chance to talk to more just plain folk, and that was good

we looked so non threatening, it was a decided advantage. This is a also a key when traveling internationally. If you look like trouble, it will likely find you.

Why isn't Detroit on that list? They all went to St. Louis.

I'm not a world traveler, yet, but I've moved around a few times in the US. Every time we were up for a move, we'd let our parents know. My parents were always very excited for us. It have then a chance to come see a part of the states they haven't seen. My in-laws on the other hand only looked for the bad in the situation, spouting off crime rates, etc. Every single time, I had to remind them that all cities have their problems, and it's only a problem if you go looking. I get the same comments when traveling alone. I just don't have time to worry about these things. There's too much to see and experience.

My dad did his world traveling as a soldier, to the same part of the world where his brother was killed. Maybe that explains why he looked for the dangers first, or maybe it was only about his kids. He was even scared when I first moved to Oregon because he'd heard they don't like strangers in those parts. But he came to visit and loved it of course

My dad sponsored a young baby girl from El Salvador who needed heart surgery. Over the years we learned how 'horrible' it is to live in El Salvador. She is escorted by an armed bodyguard to and from school, the parents band together to afford the bodyguard. Her yard is surrounded by a 10 foot wall lined with crushed glass. She has had a number of her school friends shot and killed on Black Friday. A Black Friday is declared by the local gang and means all women are to be shot on sight. There are numerous stories of her life in El Salvador where gun violence is a common theme in her lifes experience.
When she visits my dad she is amazed to be able to walk around without an armed escort and not have to worry about being grabbed off the street by armed gangs. For a few months out of a year she is able to relax whiles she visits the U.S. She hopes to be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. but so far no luck.
There are some countires I would never visit and some countries I have been to that I will never visit again. Still, I think it is important to get out of the U.S. I understand why people are willing to live in a cargo container for several months to come to the U.S. through my visits to those countries.

@ohm, But would you recommend foreigners write off our entire country and not even visit our amazing national parks?? I would recommend that not only foreginers not visit our amazining national parks but there should be less visits of our national parks by domestics.

Valid points. I heard Yellowstone really is dangerous and no one needs to go.
